Department Overview
System Protection Engineering is part of PG&E’s Electric Engineering organization and is responsible for supporting the safe, reliable operation of PG&E’s transmission and distribution systems. The department provides engineering support for protection and control systems, system disturbance analysis, equipment evaluation, and standards development.


Position Summary
The System Protection Engineer Intern is an entry-level engineering position designed to train students in the fundamentals of transmission and distribution system protection. This role works under the general technical direction of experienced System Protection Engineers and requires a high level of guidance, training, and review. The intern supports both project and maintenance & operations (M&O) activities while gaining hands-on exposure to utility protection engineering practices.

 

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.

 

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $24.52 to $35.37 


Job Responsibilities
• Support transmission and distribution protection engineering projects and M&O activities under supervision.
• Assist with protection design requirements, relay settings documentation, and development of testing procedures.
• Support review and analysis of system disturbances, relay operations, and operating events.
• Assist in preparation and maintenance of technical documentation, reports, and engineering records.
• Support equipment evaluation, approval processes, and protection standards development.
• Collaborate with engineers, field personnel, and other stakeholders to support protection engineering activities.


Training and Development
• Receive structured training in core System Protection Engineering functions.
• Learn PG&E protection philosophies, standards, and regulatory requirements.
• Perform work with close technical guidance and formal review from experienced engineers.
• Gain exposure to transmission and distribution protection systems within a regulated utility environment.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering in a full-time capacity at an accredited university.
• Must be continuing education and returning to school following the internship.

Desired Qualifications:
• Interest in power systems and electric utility engineering.

•Coursework in power systems, protection, or controls.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment and follow established engineering processes.


Work Conditions
• Work may be onsite or hybrid depending on assignment and location.
• Work locations may include PG&E offices within the service territory.
