Department Overview
Substation Engineering is an integral part of Substation Engineering Services Department at Pacific Gas & Electric Company. Substation Engineering supports the Company's $3 billion capital investment in substation and transmission line projects. It is responsible for the preparation of detailed construction drawings for substations. We provide engineering expertise to upgrade, expand and replace the Company's infrastructure in the following:
- Distribution Substations
- Transmission Substations
- Technical assistance on feasibility studies
- Construction support
- Provide valuable input in evaluating and cross-checking projects
Position Summary
As a summer intern, you will be the vital link between the company and widespread interconnection of generation, increase in capacity demand (residential, commercial and industrial) and system reliability improvements in California. Your role will be to work alongside experienced engineers to ensure that the company provides excellent service for these projects.

- Support other team members in Substation Electrical Engineering by assisting with project oversight, management, design, and planning.
- Assist with engineering contract creation and oversight for substation related work
- Become familiar with Substation Engineering standards and process to ensure contract work is done to PGE’s specifications.
- Work with and learn from other departments involved in Substations such as Maintenance, Construction, Asset Strategy, Distribution Planning, Standards, Protection, Automation, etc.
- This position is a hybrid position and will be required to show up in office at the discretion of the hiring leader. Travel may be expected 10% of the time within the PG&E Service Territory.
The successful intern will have the opportunity to lead and/or support activities as described above working with a team of experienced engineers. Additionally, the intern will gain knowledge of the larger Substation Engineering organization through the work they will be performing.
PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.
The hourly rate for this position ranges from $24.52 to $35.37
Job Responsibilities
- Collaborates with team to work on issues, projects or activities.
- Provides support and assists with the implementation process for project and/or program initiatives.
- Creates comprehensive and technical reports and develops business cases.
- Prepares letters, forms, reports, meeting summaries, presentations, memorandums, records and reference data using established formats.
- Develops data metrics and statistics and identifies data attributes.
- Documents data sources, data methodology and models evaluation metrics.
- Gathers information, prepares data and performs analysis on data models and presents findings. Produces models and actionable insights.
- Provides support for regulatory compliance activities.
- Tracks data and information and enters into tracking system.
- Compiles drawing search and inventory for programs and equipment specification information. Updates SAP asset registry.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Earning a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering within two years of the start of the internship.
- Must have a valid driver’s license or obtain one at least 30 days prior to start date
Desired:
- 3.0 GPA or greater in both cumulative GPA and major GPA
- Engineering experience in utilities, municipalities, construction, or engineering consultation
- Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members
- Strong problem solving and analytical skills
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written
- Takes initiative and can work independently with minimal direction
- EIT or FE certification
