Department Overview

 

PG&E’s Power Generation Department manages and operates the largest privately-owned hydroelectric system in the nation. These renewable electric generation resources, located mostly at high elevations in California mountain ranges including the Sierra Nevada and southern Cascade mountains include 68 powerhouses, 184 miles of canals, 41 miles of flumes, 135 miles of tunnels, 19 miles of penstocks, 99 reservoirs, and 142,000 acres of watershed lands all covered by 26 operating licenses issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).


Position Summary

 

Helms Pumped Storage Plan (PSP) is the flagship of PG&E’s fleet. At 1.2gW of capacity, it is the second largest hydroelectric facility in California and arguably the must important. In addition to generating enormous amounts of renewable power, the pumping action of the facility is absolutely necessary for grid stability on the West Coast. The Senior Area Manager is responsible for the safe reliable operation and maintenance of the plant. There are 26 Operations and Maintenance staff that live in Company housing onsite. These are supported by an additional team of professionals located 43 miles away in Auberry, CA

 

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors. This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E’s discretionary incentive compensation programs.

 

A reasonable salary range is:
California Minimum: $151,000
California Maximum: $257,000

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Senior Managers are responsible for a greater breadth of assets and responsibilities than the Manager.
  • Oversees the operation and maintenance of  PG&E’s most valuable  hydroelectric generation asset (approximately $2B) and the associated activities and programs.  Communicates clear operational priorities for the onsite and ancillary support teams.
  • Takes a leadership role in establishing the culture of area managed, with an emphasis on employee and public safety, and helps shape culture across the organization.
  • Applies extensive understanding of, and compliance with, regulatory requirements and policies to serve as a leader in environmental stewardship, proactively addressing environmental issues.
  • Supports senior management in strategic planning and decision-making.
  • Builds relationships with community, union, and regulatory stakeholders, and anticipates and manages third party issues and complaints to ensure their understanding of our position and minimize financial and operational impacts.
  • Establishes and reinforces expectation that all employees understand, use, and improve the applicable processes, standards and procedures, while delivering energy as necessary for the customer’s needs.
  • Maximizes the financial contribution of all assets in Power Gen, while driving optimum performance in the area. Provides key input to the strategic investment process. Identifies and manages risks to protect the corporation and maximize asset value.
  • Utilizes and improves the work management system and other tools to support management of area assets and resources.
  • Provides direct supervision, staffing, training, coaching and mentoring to the Power Generation O&M first line supervisors and Maintenance Planners and oversees their leadership of front line employees, and listens and responds to employee feedback and ensures subsequent changes are effective.

 

 

Qualifications

Minimum:

 

  • High school diploma/GED, or equivalent experience
  • Valid CA driver’s license (or out-of-state license if job applicant)
  • Eight years electric utility or electric generation facility (power plant), with at least 5 years of supervisory experience
  • Travel at least 30% of the time with occasional overnight stays.
  • Work is divided between the field and the office environment.
  • Commitment to live at the site in the Company facilities Monday-Thursday. Presence on-site outside of the regular work week may be required due to outages or other extenuating circumstances.
     

 

Desired:

  • MBA or Master’s degree in an Engineering, Construction Management, or Business Management discipline
  • Professional Engineers License
  • General knowledge of Hydro operations and associated equipment familiarity
  • Specific knowledge of Helms Hydro operations and associated equipment familiarity
  • Written and verbal communication skills
  • Fiscal management skill in determining how money will be spent to get the work done, and accounting for these expenditures
  • Ability to advocate, build relationships, and develop channels for dialogue with key community influencers and organizations
  • Aligns and maneuvers organizational resources and internal politics to solve problems or accomplish goals
  • Ability to integrate people, information, and technology to the organization’s visions, mission, and goals
  • Ability to execute complex strategies intended to change beliefs, attitudes, values, and structure
  • Knowledge of regulatory, environmental, and associated issues with thorough understanding of regulatory bodies and other regulatory functions
