Position Summary:

Oversees the protection systems installed and owned by PG&E on the 500kV system, including but not limited to breaker, reactor, transformer, and lines. Provides oversight of the PMU and synchrophasor systems including lab research and deployment of solutions to improve data usage for real-time operations and RAS applications. Provides oversight of RAS/SPS and other special schemes and pilot projects including and leading-edge research. This position will work closely with leading edge technology and guide consultants and contractors to develop new schemes not limited to the 500kV system such as Digital Substations. Manages the teams that specify, design, and apply protective relay packages for reliable and secure operation of transmission and distribution systems. Provides system support for departments that interface with protection schemes. Develops testing procedures. Performs fault and disturbance analysis, system modeling, documentation maintenance, and audits of protection equipment. Coordinates information exchange with other utilities and regulatory bodies. This job requires out of the box thinking and innovative solutions through a collaborative effort.

 

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.  Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.​

 

A reasonable salary range is:

  • Minimum Base Salary (Bay Area)    $167,000.00
  • Mid Base Salary (Bay Area)    $225,000.00
  • Maximum Base Salary (Bay Area)    $284,000.00

 

  • Minimum Base Salary (California)    $159,000.00
  • Mid Base Salary (California)    $214,000.00
  • Maximum Base Salary (California)    $270,000.00

 

Job Responsibilities:

 

  • Oversees the System Relay Settings and Relay Coordination efforts within PG&E for facilities for "all substation voltage levels"
  • Ensures maintenance and relay replacements are completed within applicable standards, schedule and budget.
  • Supports developing strategy of a sustainable relay replacement program and maintaining expected levels of reliability.
  • Supports the development of protection standards and the approval of protective relays.
  • Ensures Project, Construction, Maintenance and Operational support, 24/7 by making sure the department has required resources and goals.
  • Executes interconnection activities including interfacing with neighboring systems.
  • Participates in developing effective department metrics to measure performance against annual or longer term goals and objectives, for time bound projects or ongoing operational work. Provides data for department performance to management and adjusts based on business needs.
  • Supports the development of visual management dashboards to reflect key performance indicators for the 500 Kv TEAM (Asset Management, fault location, work portfolio, etc.)
  • Manages staff to accomplish results through effective recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management and rewards and recognition.
  • Develops and manages department budget, regularly monitoring expenses against forecast, providing explanation or justification for budget items and/or variances.
  • Outage support.
  • Negotiates with all substation voltage levels for deployment of common Protection Systems and RAS (BPA, PaciCorp, WAPA and SCE)
  • Provides oversight of NERC, PRC Standard measures of evidence to demonstrate compliance.

 

Qualifications

Minimum:

•    Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in System Protection or specific to the field of electrical power.
•    10 years of protection engineering experience including previous supervisory experience.


Desired:
•    Masters Degree in Engineering-Electrical
•    Experience in grid operations
•    Experience in protection testing and commissioning
•    Experience in substations
•    PE-Professional Engineer license in the state of California
•    Regulatory Experience (WECC and NERC)
•    IEEE Membership
•    Experience in System Protection, 15 years
•    500kV Protection and RAS experience in design and real time support
