Department Overview

 

The Electric Engineering team ensures the delivery of safe and reliable electric service to our customers. Electric Engineering is responsible for PG&E's electric distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, asset management, business planning, restoration, and emergency response.

 

Position Summary

 

Responsible for leading the integration of new Digital Substation technologies into PG&E’s electric transmission and distribution grid Substations and Switching Stations, planning, operations and investment processes. Informs Company strategic positions, influence policy and propose process improvements that enable the integration of Digital Substation, including but not limited to IEC 61850 standards and virtual protection and control, into PG&E’s grid of future that provides safe, reliable and affordable clean energy to PG&E’s customer.

 

 

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.  Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.​

A reasonable salary range is:​

Bay Area Minimum: $​140,000

Bay Area Maximum: $​238,000

&/OR​

California Minimum: $​133,000

California Maximum: $​226,000

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Assist customers in assessing the viability of Digital Substation technology and/or resource interconnection projects 
  • Collaborate with other utilities, manufacturers, engineering, IT, and standards departments on advancing new Digital Substation applications 
  • Understand the various data streams that are needed to model grid impacts and interface with the organizational groups that will benefit by using the data
  • Meet with stakeholders to better understand their issues and inform them of the potential grid impacts 
  • Explore, innovate, and demonstrate technologies that facilitate easier grid integration 
  • Identify conditions when Digital Substation technology may provide more benefits to the customers and the grid 
  • Assess potential Digital Substation technology risks at higher penetration levels and communicate to upper management 
  • May represent PG&E as a technical expert integrating Digital Substation technologies onto the electric grid in regulatory proceedings and industry working groups
  • Support identifying, developing and implementing new standards and guidelines, in collaboration with but not limited to Asset Management Standards, System Protection, System Automation, IT, and Cybersecurity Departments, to facilitate Digital Substation integration while minimizing potential grid impacts

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum:

 

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Experience with Grid Modeling Software, job-related
  • Experience in electric utility, 7 years

 

Desired:

 

 

  • Experience with data processing tools such as Excel, Access, SQL, etc. 
  • Protection System Engineering experience 
  • Automation System Engineering experience
  • Prior experience with system integration of IEC 61850 in electric utilities
  • Knowledgeable of IEC 61850 standards
  • Experience with IEC 61850 System Configuration and modeling tools  
  • Experience in Transmission or Distribution System Planning 
  • Experience in Transmission or Distribution Operations
