Department Overview

The Distribution Operations Engineering team ensures the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the electric distribution system. The team supports engineering analysis, asset data management, system modeling, operational readiness, grid modernization initiatives, and continuous improvement across distribution operations.

 

Position Summary

The Distribution Operations Engineering Intern will support system operations engineers by performing data analysis, documentation, modeling, reporting, and project support activities. This role is ideal for students pursuing engineering degrees who want hands‑on experience working with utility systems, asset data, distribution equipment, GIS/SAP systems, and operational processes.

The intern will work closely with engineers, supervisors, and cross-functional stakeholders to improve data accuracy, support operational initiatives, and help deliver technical insights that enhance system reliability and operational performance.

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. 

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $24.52 to $35.37 

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with engineers and team members to support ongoing operational issues, projects, and engineering activities.
  • Assist with implementing project and program initiatives, including preparing materials, tracking progress, and documenting results.
  • Create technical reports, summaries, and business cases using established templates and engineering inputs.
  • Prepare letters, forms, meeting summaries, presentations, memorandums, and reference data sets.
  • Develop and maintain operational data metrics, statistics, dashboards, and trend analyses.
  • Document data sources, data methodologies, and evaluation models used for engineering decisions.
  • Gather and analyze data sets related to distribution assets, system performance, or operational processes; present findings and actionable insights to the team.
  • Support regulatory and compliance activities by collecting data, preparing exhibits, and maintaining documentation.
  • Track engineering and operational information using internal systems and databases.
  • Perform drawing searches and compile inventory of equipment, specifications, and standards supporting engineering programs.
  • Update SAP asset registry information to improve accuracy of distribution asset and equipment records.
  • Assist with system model cleanup or data verification in GIS, SAP, OMS, and other enterprise systems.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or mater's program in electrical engineering, computer science, data science, or similar degree preferred
  • Must be continuing their education toward a degree during and/or after the internship

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering
  • Strong interest in power systems, grid operations, asset management, or engineering analysis
  • Experience with data analysis tools (Excel, Python, Power BI, SQL, or similar)
  • Familiarity with engineering documentation, technical writing, or data management
  • Ability to analyze, interpret, and present technical information
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work autonomously and collaboratively in a team environment
