Department Overview

The Strategy & Innovation team is responsible for driving PG&E’s enterprise strategy lifecycle, charting the course for cross-enterprise emerging strategies, and catalyzing innovation and incubation of impactful products and solutions. The Strategy & Innovation department is a team of innovative and driven employees working together to build a clean energy future for California

Position Summary

The Strategy & Innovation team is seeking four motivated graduate summer interns to help advance key workstreams. Interns will be assigned to a team within Strategy and Innovation, and will focus on one of four projects, listed below:

  • Electrification Customer Experience (eCx) Strategy: Help bring the Electrification Customer Experience (eCX) strategy to life. This role supports our eCX vision - making electrification the preferred customer choice - by designing and delivering simplicity, affordability, and value throughout the electrification customer journey. The work is highly cross-functional, partnering with multiple teams across PG&E including Clean Energy Transportation, Building Electrification, Marketing, Customer Insights, Service Planning, and IT to translate strategy into practical, customer-centered outcomes. Final project description will be developed with the successful candidate, and could include:
    • Building cross-functional tools and processes that enable consistent, scalable delivery of the electrification customer experience
    • Engaging with internal teams to develop business cases, governance processes, and obtain buy-in and leadership approval
    • Conduct data analysis to draw insights into customer behavior, track progress against electrification goals, and identify opportunities for process improvement
    • Conduct market and/or customer research to validate drivers, metrics, and targets

  • Innovation Accelerator: Support PG&E’s Innovation Accelerator by documenting core Accelerator processes, strengthening records management, and building reusable tools that help scale the Accelerator within PG&E’s systems. This project will require the intern to learn how the Accelerator operates end‑to‑end and translate that knowledge into clear documentation, templates, and overview materials. The work produces concrete, asynchronous deliverables that directly support operational maturity, consistency, and long‑term scalability of the Innovation Accelerator.

  • Strategic Services: Help translate external market conditions and internal expertise into strategy by developing business scenario models and decision‑support tools for PG&E that integrate industry benchmarks, enterprise performance targets, financials, and macroeconomic trends. The intern will help translate external market conditions and regulatory signals into structured scenarios that inform enterprise strategy and planning with an emphasis on P&L impact. A key outcome will be designing a repeatable process that blends top‑down strategic guidance with bottom‑up business unit inputs to stress‑test assumptions and evaluate trade‑offs within our multi-year True North Strategy and its impact on our P&L. The work will directly support leadership decision‑making by improving alignment, transparency, and rigor in how future outcomes are assessed.

  • Decarbonization Strategies: Support the Decarbonization Strategies team by developing a business case and recommendation for PG&E on geothermal Utility-Owned Thermal Energy Networks (TENs). TENs for building heating and cooling can serve as a peak load management tool to alleviate the need for costly grid investments. The summer intern will work with PG&E subject matter experts to gather inputs that will enable a full evaluation of the business case of utility-owned TENS.  The business case and recommendation should consider financial, regulatory, social, and decarbonization aspects of TENs.

Interns will also have the opportunity to learn about the broader Strategy & Innovation organization through cross functional team events and learning opportunities.
