We are seeking a Work Methods & Procedures Field Specialist to support field maintenance and construction operations. Reporting to the Work Methods & Procedures Manager, this role provides hands‑on technical and subject matter expertise that helps improve safety, reliability, and efficiency across the electric system.

The field Specialist works closely with field teams, providing day‑to‑day support related to work methods, field maintenance practices, and technical challenges. This role applies substation subject matter expert level expertise to field support sessions, projects, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives. The Field Specialist also plays a key role in developing, updating, and maintaining bulletins, manuals, job aids, and tailboards that align with electric standards, work methods, and procedures.

 

This position supports work associated with high‑voltage equipment ranging from 208 VAC to 500kV and requires hands‑on experience commissioning and testing primary and secondary substation equipment, including breakers, switchgear, circuit breakers, load tap changers, gas insulated switchgear, and transformers.

 

The selected candidate must live within PG&E’s service territory.

 

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.  Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.​

 

A reasonable salary range is:

Minimum Base Salary (Bay Area)            $102,000.00

Mid Base Salary (Bay Area)        $132,000.00

Maximum Base Salary (Bay Area)           $162,000.00

 

Minimum Base Salary (California)         $97,000.00

Mid Base Salary (California)      $125,000.00

Maximum Base Salary (California)        $154,000.00

 

Scope of Work / Focus Areas

  • Technical support to field maintenance and construction crews
  • Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) program support and procedural adherence verification
  • Human performance / human error analysis, investigation support, and reporting initiatives
  • Training material development and delivery (ad hoc and/or through the PG&E Academy)
  • Technical documentation stewardship (bulletins, manuals, job aids, tailboards, and control documents)
  • Substation Equipment failure investigations and field support for changes to maintenance programs
  • Special projects, including implementation of online monitoring or software systems in the field

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and support team members on company initiatives and cross-functional projects.
  • Serve as document steward for technical work procedures and assigned control documents.
  • Maintain and update assigned control documents within the established review cycle.
  • Project manage large-scope, multi-department efforts to resolve complex technical procedure and work method issues.
  • Act as a primary reviewer for technical documents and written procedures.
  • Independently research work methods and procedures for the assigned line of business.
  • Use moderate to complex analysis to assess best practices and recommend improvements to work methods and procedures.
  • Lead and/or support the development and delivery of training materials (ad hoc and/or through the PG&E Academy).
  • Partner with stakeholders in the assigned line of business to review, align, and improve written work methods and procedures.
  • Support and/or review investigations of human factor-related events impacting the electric system, as assigned.
  • Participate in QC/QA activities to confirm appropriate programs exist and evaluate effectiveness of procedural adherence and training. May require international travel to perform factory audits.
  • Review asset health and interpret and or perform Doble test results
  • Support field crews by performing emergency SF6 sampling.
  • Assist field crews by conducting and evaluating dissolved gas analysis for oil-filled breakers and transformers.
  • Ability to work overtime on short notice during emergencies.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 8 years of experience in the electric utility industry.
  • 5 years at the journeyman level, or 2 years at the career level (or equivalent).

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Completion of Reinhausen or Factory certified Load Tap Changer training.
  • Have experience reviewing or performing Doble Power Factor Testing
  • Certified Journeyman Electrician, or high voltage Electrical Equipment Tester.
  • Guidance Document Author Training (CORP-0521).
  • Advanced analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Project management experience with strong prioritization and multi-tasking skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with diverse work groups.
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Doble Power Factor result interpretation training.
  • Substation high voltage equipment troubleshooting or commissioning testing.

 

Additional Information

This role regularly partners with stakeholders across the assigned line of business and may be assigned to field support for construction and maintenance, special projects, and emergency response activities. Work may include developing and maintaining technical documentation, supporting audits and investigations, and contributing to changes to maintenance programs and/or field system implementations.
