Department Overview

PG&E’s Underground Program organization is working to reduce wildfire risk each day as we underground 10,000 miles of distribution lines.  We are responsible for working across all internal teams and engaging external stakeholders to support successfully meeting our goals and reducing wildfire risk in our hometowns. We work in an exciting and fast-paced environment.

Position Summary

The Strategy, Innovation and Partnership Leadership team identifies, tests, and vets out new tools, technologies, processes and standards to capitalize on best in class or emerging technologies that present opportunities for PG&E, particularly in the Undergrounding program portfolio.

The team engages with internal stakeholders to collect information, build internal capabilities, and foster a culture of innovation and collaboration.  The team also, critically, works externally to establish partnerships and collaborate on new technologies which will benefit the Company.

  • This position will drive innovation to update and/or identify new technologies, tools, techniques & methodologies, processes, standards, or other approaches to help improve the safety, risk reduction, quality, cost efficiency, or employee morale of the Undergrounding program.
  • Our team will take an end-to-end approach to underground innovation from idea generation through evaluation, pilot, document development (standards, procedures, bulletins, etc.), implementation (including training, communication, testing, etc.) and monitoring / support.
  • This position and team will embrace big ideas but also the small details and rigorous process steps that bring those ideas from concept to reality.  The team will also need to explore and engage with improvement or innovation ideas in many disciplines from scoping and risk prioritization to engineering / design, permitting, construction (both civil and electrical), job closeout, data management, and more.

Successful innovations may be shiny and complex (new data visualization or design software solutions) or dirty and humble (different ways to excavate, move and backfill dirt or pave roads).  Our team will need to show significant flexibility, intellectual curiosity and a mindset that embraces both free-thinking and process adherence.

With big goals – 10,000 miles of distribution lines to undergrounding – and ambitious improvements expected – driving the unit cost to around $2M per mile – this position and team will be critical to PG&E’s success in delivering for our communities the long-term goals of the Undergrounding program.

This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned work location based on business need. The assigned work location will be within the PG&E Service Territory.
