Department Overview 

This position will reside within PG&E’s System Planning organization. System Planning is part of PG&E’s Engineering, Planning and Strategy organization.  The vision for System Planning is to lead the way in inventing California’s new clean-energy future.  The work is informed by analytics using an integrated planning approach, considering California’s and PG&E’s electric system, gas system, advanced load management, and bulk generation resources. System Planning provides support for PG&E’s commercial and regulatory activities and important linkages to PG&E’s policy, strategy, investment, and finance plans.

 

Position Summary

The Principal Clean Energy Strategic Analyst will support PG&E’s long-term system planning efforts to advance PG&E environmental goals.

 

The successful candidate has a strong background in the energy industry (California or similar markets) and is able to take a conceptual idea to create innovative solution and lead complex initiatives to advance PG&E’s position.

 

This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned work location based on business need. The preferred work location is Oakland, CA. 

 

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed between the entry point and the middle of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.​ This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E’s discretionary incentive compensation programs. 

 

A reasonable salary range is:

Bay Area Minimum: $144,000.00

Bay Area Maximum: $244,000.00

 

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Lead Electric System Reliability Resource Planning, Modelling, and Analysis: Leads complex or innovative analysis associated with CAISO electric system reliability and loss of load expectation (LOLE), taking a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions for an evolving electric grid composed of large amounts of renewables, emerging technology (e.g., carbon capture and storage (CCS), Direct Air Capture (DAC)), and increasingly distributed generation. This position is expected to be a thought leader in generation planning and integration in of emerging technologies, capable of identifying emerging issues and developing solutions.
  • Regulatory Filings: Acts as a witness for moderately complex, rulemaking or new policy design proceedings, including developing proposals with internal stakeholders preparing high quality testimony with compelling evidence and articulation; developing work papers and exhibits; testifying at proceedings; participating in workshops; preparing technical content of data responses; reviewing, analyzing and summarizing third party testimony, regulatory proposals, pleadings, agreements and decisions; and developing or revising proposals and analyses for submittal in regulatory proceedings.  Acts as a witness assistant for complex, rulemaking or new policy design proceedings.   
  • Marginal Generation Cost: Develops and maintains advanced generation marginal cost methodologies, models and analytical tools and conducts complex quantitative, theoretical and policy research related to electric rate design, cost of service and other rate issues.  Develops conclusions and recommendations and presents to management.
  • Project Management and Integrated Planning: Actively collaborates with PG&E’s planning organizations and external partners to advance integrated planning and innovative solutions.
  • Mentoring and Education: Proactively mentors and trains coworkers and junior analysts and shares subject matter expertise with the broader PG&E teams to help others gain a deeper understanding of emerging resource planning issues.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Physics, Econometrics or Economics, Engineering, Mathematics, Applied Sciences, Statistics, Business or equivalent field.
  • Job-related experience 8 years, OR Master’s Degree and 7 years job-related OR Doctorate and 5 years

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of California or similar energy markets and environmental policy goals
  • Master’s degree in a technical field
  • Knowledge and expertise in utility industry in the areas of resource planning, transmission planning, CAISO (or similar) market.
  • Experience with capacity expansion and production cost simulation models, especially pertaining to electric markets (e.g., Plexos, SERVM)
  • Python or equivalent programming language for complex modeling and analytics.
  • Experience with state and/or regional, federal energy regulatory proceedings and processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to take a conceptual issue and independently design and complete innovative analysis to draw meaningful conclusions.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills and ability to concisely convey information based on unique audience needs.
  • Strong capability in building internal and external relationships and identifying customer concerns.
  • Strong capability in prioritizing work to meet commitments aligned with organizational goals.
