Department Overview

Information Technology is a unified organization comprised of various departments which collaborate effectively to deliver high quality technology solutions. The Billing Modernization team, resides within the Customer Systems & Solutions (CSS) group and is part of the Product & Enterprise Platforms group that supports IT projects, operations, risks & compliance. This team is in the midst of a large customer transformation journey with a main emphasis of modernizing and re-architecting our Billing and rates platforms.

 

Position Summary

The Customer Care and Billing IT Principal Solution Architect role will be responsible with driving the solution architecture, developing and maintaining Customer Billing Modernization Technology Roadmap, establishing standards in architectural frameworks and systems design.  

 

The ideal candidate will manage the technical design of our CC&B (Customer Care and Billing) Platform and our move towards a Unified Customer to Meter (C2M) system for all our Customer Billing Services.  The scope of this position also includes dependencies and integrations of solutions in PG&E’s broader application ecosystem and external party systems, targeting to deliver cost effective solutions while maximizing service delivery and coworker satisfaction at PG&E. 

 

The Principal Solution Architect will align to the Enterprise Architecture group within the IT and Customer organization, fostering a standard practice that is both holistic and distributed. By standardizing tools, delineating clear deliverables, and enhancing governance protocols, the role aims to expedite delivery of initiatives, fostering an environment where standardization and reuse are the norm. Accountability and ownership are key tenets, as Principal Architect will be empowered to take full responsibility for Billing technology roadmaps. Maintaining robust relationships with IT architects, Business Architects, IT delivery leads, and Functional Area leads will be essential for the Principal Solution Architect to ensure cohesive and strategic alignment of projects. This collaboration is vital for the alignment of work with the True North Strategy (TNS) and the associated value streams, propelling the organization's objectives forward.  This role calls for a leader who is not only technically adept but also a strategic thinker, a driver for change, and a mentor who will architect not just systems but the future of the Customer landscape to standardized platforms.


The Principal Architect will have four primary areas of focus: 

  • Bring Industry and Technology trends on Energy and Utilities.
  • Developing and owning the 10-year roadmap for Customer Billing Technology aligned to True North Strategy (TNS) of IT and Customer & Enterprise Solutions.
  • Simplify, modernize, and rationalize the Customer Billing Technology portfolio.
  • Continue the identification and adoption of new technologies that will position the enterprise for its competitive advantage.


PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. We would not anticipate that the individual hired into this role would land at or near the top half of the range described below, but the decision will be dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.​


Pay range is:​ $151,000.00 - $224,400.00

 

Reporting Relationship

This position will report to the Senior Director of Customer Systems and Solutions and will manage Solutions Architecture for PG&E’s multi-phased Billing Modernization transformation program. These responsibilities will be performed in accordance with PG&E’s vision and values. 

This position will be based at PG&E headquarters in Oakland, California with the expectation of being in-person at least two days per week.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Establish and manage Customer to Meter (C2M) technical architecture runway including processes for reviewing and approving solution designs and developing metrics to track the effectiveness and quality of C2M technical architecture.
  • Lead C2M solution technical architecture, technology selection, and develop guiding principles and patterns
  • Design C2M technical solution architecture
  • Develop and maintain infrastructure standards, best practices, and architectural guidelines for Customer Billing systems. Develop strategy, approach, patterns, guardrails for the data Solution, integration, and D&A.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define and develop the application architecture strategy and technology roadmap for Customer Billing systems, specifically C2M.
  • Stay updated with the latest industry trends, technologies, and best practices related to Customer Billing infrastructure and C2M and recommend suitable enhancements or improvements.
  • Collaborate with vendors and third-party service providers to evaluate, select, and implement C2M and non-C2M applications to meet business objectives.
  • Develop integration strategies and oversee the implementation of middleware and integration with knowledge of other Integration tools like MuleSoft.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • B.A./B.S. in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Administration, or equivalent field/work experience
  • 10 years job-related experience or equivalent within a company, being responsible for solution architecture and project implementation experience OR Master’s degree and 8 years of experience in IT engineering design and/or technical project implementation 
  • Significant Experience (5+ years) in designing, implementing, and managing business solutions in CIS and Customer Billing systems Re-Architecture and re-engineering, with a strong emphasis on Oracle’s CC&B or C2M platforms

 

Desired:

  • M.A./M.S. in computer science, information systems, business administration, or equivalent field/work experience
  • Experience in running Billing Operations, projects, and upgrades
  • Experience Architecting with Meter Data Management (MDM) Systems
  • Experience with Smart Meter Operations
  • Experience with Enterprise Integration Technologies (e.g. Mulesoft)
