Department Overview

The Data Management and Analytics Product Management team supports the development and implementation of software tools used both internally and externally across the organization. These tools vary in size and technical complexity and are built on a range of platforms and applications. They help drive operational efficiency, support wildfire risk reduction, improve system reliability, ensure regulatory compliance, and enable the successful delivery of electric engineering projects. 

 

Position Summary

The Innovative and Emerging Technology Manager leads a team of skilled technical product and project managers to deliver high-value analytics and data products that support the strategic objectives of the Electric Engineering and Operations teams. This role is responsible for defining product strategy, shaping the technical architecture for scalable and effective product development, and ensuring seamless integration of solutions into existing and new processes.

The manager will collaborate closely with data analysts, data engineers, GIS analysts, program leads, external vendors, and leadership to develop innovative, data-driven solutions. A strong understanding of emerging technology is critical to the role, including: AI/GenAI, machine learning fundamentals (supervised & unsupervised), neural networks and deep learning, natural language processing and computer vision, and remote sensing is critical. The ideal candidate will also think strategically about whether we should build or buy technical solutions, what features and applications will support client needs, will possess strong problem-solving abilities, and demonstrate a proven ability to build and maintain client relationships.


This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and the Oakland General Office(OGO) twice a week.

 

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.  Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.
 
A reasonable salary range is:

Bay Area Minimum: $167,000

Bay Area Mid: $225,000

Bay Area Maximum:$284,000

 

Job Responsibilities

 

Leadership & Strategy

  • Manages staff to accomplish results through effective recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management and coaching, and rewards and recognition.
  • Lead and oversee development of data product portfolios, driving strategic vision and execution in alignment with PG&E’s True North Strategy for Electric Engineering and Operations.
  • Develop product roadmaps, secure funding, and align stakeholders on portfolio planning.
  • Drive change management efforts to successfully integrate analytics products into existing or new business processes.
  • Build and lead a high-performing team, setting clear goals, providing professional development opportunities, and ensuring access to the necessary tools, technology, and training.
  • Maintain transparency into product status through lean visual management tools across sub-teams.
  • Manage financial responsibilities, including budgeting, forecasting, contracting, and liability accruals.
  • Utilizes deep understanding of business drivers and financial levers, along with instrumental data science techniques, to prioritize work and provide strategic decision support.

 

Product Management & Communication

  • Works with enterprise leaders as an advocate for digital transformation of the business through the adoption of data science, artificial intelligence, and data-driven business processes.
  • Supervises the technical development of mathematical models and AI simulations which represent complex business scenarios through formulas and data science code for problem-solving.
  • Conducts risk evaluation studies of model impact on business outcomes.
  • Assesses business implications associated with modeling assumptions, inputs, methodologies, technical implementation, analytic procedures and processes, and advanced data analysis.
  • Monitors the development of data science, machine learning, artificial intelligence, mathematical modeling and optimization, and similar emerging technologies to continuously assess their impact on business strategies. Participates with peers in risk and maturity assessment of data science tools
  • Define and communicate product requirements, ensuring alignment with business objectives and client needs.
  • Develop and execute scalable product architectures that enable efficient data processing, analysis, and visualization.
  • Oversee end-to-end product development, from ideation and design to deployment and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with GIS analysts and engineers to integrate geospatial data into analytics solutions.
  • Identify and implement innovative technical solutions to address cross-organizational challenges.
  • Ensure data products adhere to security, compliance, and performance best practices.
  • Capture and synthesize meeting notes, ensuring key decisions, action items, and follow-ups are well-documented.
  • Oversee development of product charters with clearly defined scope, goals, stakeholders, and success metrics.
  • Build compelling slide decks and presentations to communicate product roadmaps, progress, data documentation, and decisions, and insights through effective storytelling.
  • Drive cross-functional collaboration, ensuring alignment between technical teams, business leaders, and external stakeholders.
  • Oversee team that develops and maintains product backlogs, prioritizing features and enhancements based on business value and user feedback. 
  • Defining success metrics tied to business outcomes: cost savings, efficiency gains, risk reduction, and scalability
  • Promote awareness and adoption of data and analytics capabilities across PG&E.

 

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Applied Science, Data Science, Engineering, Physics, Economics, or equivalent field
  • 2 years hands-on experience in data science (or no experience, if possess Advanced Degree, as described above)
  • 2 years of leadership experience in data science 

Desired:

  • Doctorate Degree in Data Science, Machine Learning, or job-related discipline or equivalent experience
  • Utility industry experience, electric or gas, or other job-related, 3 years
