Department Overview

The Transmission Planning department ensures the planning of clean, safe, reliable, and affordable energy to nearly 16 million people in Northern and Central California. 

 

More specifically, the Transmission System Planning (TSP) department performs Interconnection studies, multi-year assessments, and develops a portfolio of transmission expansion plans and projects to meet the company's transmission needs for delivery of safe and reliable electric service to our customers, while adhering to North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC) planning standards. The department is also involved in developing transmission expansion and strategy to help achieve the Company's and California’s clean energy goals.

 

Position Summary

The Transmission Regional Planning team as a department is responsible for providing technical support and transmission system reliability analysis that supports the development of transmission solutions for challenges to meet California’s clean energy goals, while still ensuring compliance and highly reliable service to electric customers. Also the team is responsible for preparation of Base Case and forecast for annual transmission planning assessment. 

Regional Planning is looking for a talented summer intern to help support the development of Base Case, Forecast, and innovative, comprehensive, and environmentally acceptable transmission plans to ensure safe, reliable, economic and efficient operation of the electric transmission system.  Transmission planners generally have the following job responsibilities:

 

  • Assist with preparation of Base Case and Forecast for Annual Transmission Planning Assessment
  • Perform transmission planning studies related to compliance, annual transmission system assessment, all phases of load or generation interconnection, reliability, inter and intra-regional studies, or any other studies to support obligations to internal PG&E departments and external entities
  • Perform long-term studies that develop strategy and comprehensive plan to ensure safe, reliable, economic and efficient operation of the electric transmission system
  • Review and develop electrical computer simulation models of transmission lines and substations for transmission planning databases
  • Develop Engineering Programming Computer Language (EPCL), Python scripts enabled programs for computer simulation tools
  • Review electrical single line and operational diagrams for development of future plans

 

The successful intern will have the opportunity to support activities as described above working with a team of experienced Transmission Planners.  Additionally, the intern will gain knowledge of the larger Electric Transmission Planning organization through the work they will be performing.

 

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.​

 

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $18.43 to $35.10

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Earning a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline, preferably with focus on power systems
  • Students must be continuing education towards degree during and/or after the internship 

 

Desired:

  • EIT or FE certification
  • 3.0 GPA or greater in both cumulative GPA and major GPA
  • Engineering experience in utilities, municipalities, construction, or engineering consultation
  • Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills 
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Takes initiative and can work independently with minimal direction
