Department Overview

 The Geosciences Department provides a wide range of consulting services to internal PG&E clients. Our highly qualified team of Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) include geologists, geotechnical engineers, structural engineers, seismologists, and GIS professionals that support evaluation of geologic hazards, completion of geotechnical assessments, development of geospatial datasets informing risk evaluations, development of seismic resiliency programs, management of seismic risks for all company business lines, and related initiatives with the wider scientific and technical community. Our goal is to support safe, reliable, and affordable energy delivery, regulatory compliance, and efficient risk-informed business operations.

 

The group is also chartered with continuing to develop state of the art analytical insights, tools, and assessments of new data and interpretation of existing data with emergent technologies in geosciences, geotechnical engineering, and seismic engineering. Geosciences develops the seismic hazard information and performs risk analyses for PG&E’s infrastructure including critical facilities such as the Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP), dams, and gas and electric transmission lines.
 

Position Summary

The Seismic Engineering team of PG&E’s Geosciences Department is seeking candidates for a Principal Civil/Structural Engineer position to assist with programmatic to project level work across business units and the PG&E service territory. Candidates should have experience in civil/structural engineering, seismic risk quantification, and program management.  Successful candidates will be able to leverage their experience to help manage, develop, and improve programs focused on seismic risk management.  

  • This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned work location based on business need. The assigned work location will be within the PG&E Service Territory. Bay Area preferred. 

 

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.  Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.

 

Bay Minimum: $163,000
Bay Maximum: $277,000

CA Minimum: $155,000

CA Maximum: $263,000

 

This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E’s discretionary incentive compensation programs. 
 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Solves unique and complex problems.
  • Anticipates issues and develops innovative solutions.
  • May manage major cross-functional projects and initiatives.
  • Ensure that PG&E facilities are safe from geological and seismic hazards.
  • Perform structural evaluations.
  • Recommend mitigation of seismic hazards.
  • Establish protocols for damage assessment of buildings for life safety after significant earthquakes, and seismic retrofitting of critical facilities.
  • Serve as interface between Geosciences group and Diablo Canyon Power Plant personnel for CAP resolution, document retrieval and review, and QA activities.
  • Evaluate and support nuclear power plant risk model modifications and output with focus on component fragilities and retrofit/modification design.
  • Provide high overall quality of service as measured by regulatory agreements and approvals.
  • Facilitate interactions with regulatory agencies.
  • Influence regulators by making them aware and knowledgeable about emerging seismic safety lessons and assisting them in developing appropriate regulatory requirements.
  • Provide up-to-date information on relevant and emerging earthquake issues to PG&E officers and other key stakeholders. 
  • Supporting the PG&E Emergency Operations Center
  • Manage and review external consultant work.
  • Provide mentoring for our engineers.

 

 

Qualifications

Minimum:

 

  • Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience
  • Job-related experience, 10 years

 

Desired:

 

  • Graduate Degree in Civil/Structural Engineering or job-related discipline or equivalent experience
  • PE-Professional Engineer license
  • SE-Structural Engineer license
  • Job-related experience, 12 years
  • Active participation in Industry Codes and Standards updates.
  • Project or program management experience related to seismic risk quantification and management.
  • Design and evaluation of nuclear plant component fragilities and risk model input.
  • Electric and/or Gas system design, evaluation, and retrofit experience.
  • Earthquake response and post-event inspections for both structural and non-structural facility elements.
