Department Overview

The position will reside within PG&E’s Strategy and Innovation organization on our Decarbonization Strategy team. PG&E’s Decarbonization Strategy team bridges long-term energy transition strategy and execution across PG&E’s lines of business and coordinates with internal and external stakeholders identify and analyze innovative and cost-effective approaches to adapt PG&E’s business to a decarbonized future. With PG&E’s core values of serving our planet and delivering for our hometowns at heart, the team provides consulting to support strategic decision making on long term company investments and leads high-profile utility initiatives.   

 

Position Summary

The Gas Decarbonization Engineer, part of the Decarbonization Strategy team, will lead technology identification, evaluation, technical analysis, and project management activities that advance commercial and industrial decarbonization in support of PG&E’s net‑zero emissions goals. This role focuses on assessing and developing cost-effective solutions to decarbonize the PG&E gas system (front of meter) and customer end‑use equipment (behind the meter).

 

The Engineer will collaborate with various PG&E departments, external stakeholders, and customers. They will independently manage engineering engagements with third‑party firms and support the team with technical and techno‑economic analyses using tools such as Excel, Forge, or similar platforms.

 

The ideal candidate is a self‑starter who can navigate ambiguity, proactively shape their own work, and help bring structure to evolving problem spaces. They must be able to respectfully and collaboratively drive progress, provide clear technical guidance, and work effectively with diverse stakeholders.

 

This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned work location based on business need. The preferred work location is Oakland, CA.

 

PG&E is providing the full salary/pay range for this position.  The actual amount paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, internal equity, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, and geographic location.  The range to reasonably expect will be between the minimum to the midpoint of the range.  The final decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to the factors above. This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E’s discretionary incentive compensation programs.

 

Bay Area Minimum: $136,000.00

Bay Area Midpoint: $184,000.00

Bay Area Maximum: $232,000.00

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Serve as PG&E’s in-house Technologist and expert specializing in practical and innovative solutions to complex technical problems and issues related to cost‑effective gas system decarbonization.
  • Is recognized as a subject matter expert in decarbonizing various gas end uses; provides breadth of knowledge and performs analyses and projects across several disciplines including clean fuels, process technologies, and geological storage.
  • Applies hands-on operational and development experience from industrial facilities (e.g., gas processing, refining, manufacturing, power generation, or similar) to evaluate the real‑world feasibility of proposed decarbonization solutions, going beyond table‑top or purely academic assessments.
  • Prepares technical analyses, economic models, graphs, maps, and other materials as required to support findings, recommendations, regulatory documents, and the PG&E Net Zero Command Center.
  • Project management: drives multi‑disciplinary technical initiatives and studies as required.
  • Participates on and represents PG&E at technical working groups and venues as appropriate.
  • Studies regulatory, permitting, and policy documents related to the gas system and the energy transition to ensure technical solutions are aligned with California requirements.
  • Presents engineering research, findings, solutions, and recommendations to Directors and Managers across various departments.
  • Acts as an “engineering/technical Rosetta Stone,” translating complex engineering concepts into clear insights for colleagues across diverse disciplines within a non‑engineering team.
  • Works independently with guidance only on the most complex projects.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 7 years of engineering experience

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in mechanical, chemical, or process engineering.
  • Practical engineering experience including operations and/or technology or equipment development or management in an industrial environments (e.g., gas infrastructure, power generation, refining, chemical processing, or industrial facilities).
  • Prior experience as a facility engineer, process engineer, or solutions engineer .
  • Prior experience as a technical consultant.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to non‑engineers, including strong presentation and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with customers and stakeholders.
  • Proven project management experience, including coordinating deliverables and driving work to completion.
  • Demonstrated project management experience overseeing project budgets of at least $10MM.
