Department Overview
The Rates Department within PG&E’s Corporate Affairs organization develops and provides regulatory expertise in all gas and electric rates proceedings at the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). In addition, the Rates team conducts cost of service analysis, forecasts revenues, analyzes trends and underlying drivers impacting rates and bills, and supports other organizations in understanding customer usage trends as applicable towards reviewing and enhancing various PG&E programs.
Position Summary
PG&E is seeking a highly motivated Intern for the Electric Rates team. This role involves a unique combination of data analysis, economic modeling, and public policy analysis. Under direction of senior team members, the intern will perform analysis of the impact of changes in electric rate design; conducts analysis of drivers impacting rate levels; supports cross-functional rate-related initiatives managed by the team; supports development of presentations to leadership; and prepares responses to internal requests regarding rate trends, analysis, and benchmarking.

Responsibilities
- Assists with running existing quantitative models as assigned; assists in rebuilding existing analytical capabilities in new applications; and supports quantitative, theoretical, and policy research related to electric rate design, cost allocation, cost of service, and other rate issues.
- Supports witnesses or witness assistants including writing sections of testimony; developing work papers and exhibits; preparing technical content of less complex data responses; reviewing, analyzing, and summarizing third party testimony, regulatory proposals, pleadings, agreements, and decisions; and assisting in developing or revising proposals and analyses for submittal in regulatory proceedings.
- Assists with analyzing data using existing basic models and analytical tools to develop existing and ad hoc reports, statistics, trends, and profiles. Assists with preparing presentation of results.
- Assists with documentation of processes, guidelines, standards, and models. Assists with continuous improvement projects.
- Assists with research to provide historical context regarding regulatory issues or assists in providing such context for complex regulatory issues.
PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.
The hourly rate for this position ranges from $19.91 to $35.11.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Qualified candidates are pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Economics, Engineering, Public Policy, Statistics, or other related discipline.
- Students must be continuing their education towards their degree during and/or after the internship.
- Demonstrated interest in the energy sector through coursework, research, or job experience.
Desired:
- Good interpersonal and team collaboration skills.

- Basic prioritization and project management skills to effectively manage multiple assignments or a project with demanding time constraints.
- Basic skills in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

- Basic knowledge of the utility and energy industry working lines of business including generation,
- procurement, transmission, distribution, and customer services.
- Basic knowledge of the functional lines of PG&E’s electric and gas business.
- Basic understanding of pricing and tariffs theory, practice, and energy markets; policy development; and marginal cost analysis.
- Basic understanding of finance and accounting principles and terms.
