Department Overview

The Electric Planning Policy & Modernization (EPPM) team’s mission is to help PG&E prepare for the increasing complexities of the electric grid of today and the future. The EPPM team provides grid capacity data, develops state of the art software and tools, and deploys new processes, to enhance transparency into PG&E’s distribution planning which enables the integration of Distributed Energy Resources (e.g., solar PV, energy storage, energy efficiency, and demand response). As part of the Electric System Planning team, help us chart the future of the utility and the energy industry.

The EPPM team works collaboratively with diverse stakeholders both within and external to PG&E to develop new visualization and planning tools to inform grid capacity constraints and prepare for building and transportation electrification. The team works in a matrixed environment to identify barriers in delivering electric capacity to our customers and implements solutions to address them. The team also advocates for strategies and policies to procure and integrate DERs effectively and reliably through regulatory proceedings, such as Modernize the Electric Grid for a High Distributed Energy Resources (DER) Future.

  • The publication of an annual Grid Needs Assessment (GNA) and Distribution Deferral Opportunity Report (DDOR) that identifies opportunities for Distributed Energy Resources (e.g., solar PV, energy storage, energy efficiency, and demand response)
  • Examine and document the methods by which to include known load applications from customers into the distribution load forecast
  • Visualization of distribution, transmission, and generation metrics to track capacity project execution across several PG&E data sources
