Department Overview

 

The Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings Program Management Office (EPSS PMO) is a relatively new team at PG&E that coordinated the launch, full-scale implementation, and long-term operational maintenance of EPSS – PG&E’s game-changing wildfire mitigation program that enables protective devices such as line reclosers to “fast-trip” on fault detection, significantly reducing utility-caused ignitions and catastrophic wildfires.

 

 

 

Position Summary

 

EPSS Systems & Data Management team supports the program by both maintaining and enhancing complex data pipelines and applications that underpin nearly every aspect of EPSS. The team leverages live system information every day from meteorology, GIS, SCADA, and engineering data (powerbase) for 2 million customers and over 40,000 miles of conductor.

 

 

Data Team Roles and Responsibilities

  • Manage the data pipeline & controls that determine the EPSS Program Scope (devices & circuits)
  • Ensure the system is consistently in the appropriate posture to prevent catastrophic wildfires
  • Support operations with reporting/tracking and opportunities to continuously improve

 

 

The EPSS Data Internship position will be at the groundbreaking edge of this through several potential opportunities in refining & establishing new data pipelines, experimentation with AI/LLM toolkits, and front-end application building. This is a major developmental opportunity to get hands-on experience in using Palantir Foundry as a full-stack data platform with a highly engaged & experienced group of data scientists, data engineers, and top-notch business analysts.  The successful candidate is expected to support senior team members on key initiatives including but not limited to:

 

  • Considering new approaches to device state validation using a combination of real-time telemetry and other data sources.
  • Building data products that support reporting and management of 2026 initiatives within EPSS Operations to improve electric reliability and reduce outage durations.
  • Enhancing the EPSS Planning team’s capability to execute and track deployment of new devices and device firmware for improved program performance and effectiveness

 

 

This position is hybrid with the expectation of working in PG&E’s General Office in Oakland, CA approximately 3 days per week. 

 

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.

 

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $20.88 to $35.37.

 

 

 

Responsibilities

 

Supporting senior staff with:

 

  • Python/pyspark coding & debugging
  • Data pipeline building & maintenance
  • Front-end application features & enhancements
  • Reporting on-site to company headquarters 2-3 days per week
  • Travel to the field may be required; frequency depends on the assignment and is typically less than 10%.

 

The successful intern will have the opportunity to learn about these activities as described above working with a team of experienced data scientists and analysts.  Additionally, the intern will gain knowledge of the broader electric utility business through the work they will be performing.

 

 

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum:

  • Qualified candidates are pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering or Data Science at an accredited University
  • Students must be continuing their education towards their degree during and/or after the internship
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work location

 

Desired:

  • Candidate demonstrates school projects or work experience that target energy, the utility industry, or large-scale data management for a related industry (examples: utility-scale solar implementation, grid infrastructure/resource management, data engineering/modeling for public transportation)
  • Lean Six Sigma, EIT or FE certification
  • 3.0 GPA or greater in both cumulative GPA and major GPA
  • Engineering or data experience in utilities, municipalities, construction, or engineering consultation
  • Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills 
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Highly curious and tenaciously resourceful in digging for answers and finding solutions
