Department Overview

Our team supports the Transmission & Substation Engineering groups that design and build a safer, more reliable electrical network for California. Our team is currently in the process of implementing intelligent engineering tools that will automate work processes, enhance user experiences, while achieve our project goals.

 

We are seeking a computer science professional to join our team to help support the Transmission and Substation engineering line of business. As a member of our team, you will be setting the direction for innovation in design and engineering technologies at PG&E. 

 

Position Summary

Functions as a liaison to Information Technologies from the engineering line of business, representing the end users and business process owners. Working with a team to develop business system requirements, implementations, and support. Defines user system requirements, provides user support, coordinates user acceptance testing of new tools and gathers user feedback.  Performs feasibility analysis, develops project scope, and provides recommendations on alternative solutions, project strategy and deliverable prioritization.

 

The Business Systems Specialist Internship position working for the Technology & Tools team will provide the engineering group with the data they need to make accurate and smart decisions when designing the electrical grid in the PG&E service territory.  The position will be using the common database and reporting tools to analyze data and make it relevant to the engineers and designers.  Work may range from general technical consultation or comprehensive support from planning through production implementation of new technology solutions. The successful candidate is expected to support senior engineering staff on key initiatives including but not limited to:

 

  • Analyzing equipment data found in the PG&E substation.  Presenting the data inside of desktop applications and Business Intelligence reports.
  • Develop SQL queries and extract relevant data into dashboards and reports.
  • Develop data streams to enhance 3D visualization with relevant equipment data.

 

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. 

 

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $23.08 to $36.42.

 

 

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Qualified candidates are pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering at an accredited University
  • Students must be continuing their education towards their degree during and/or after the internship

 

Desired: 

  • 3.0 GPA or greater in both cumulative GPA and major GPA
  • Engineering experience in utilities, municipalities, construction, or engineering consultation
  • Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills 
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Takes initiative and can work independently with minimal direction
  • Comfortable with SQL Syntax, “Select” statements, table joins, creating custom views
    • This will be most useful for building dashboards to interact with Grid Search data.
  • Knowledge about REST APIs, experience using Postman to test APIs
    • This will be useful when we want to pull in data from different sources that we don't have DB access to, but we do have API access (SAP / GIS servers)
    • Bentley iTwin API that would make it easier to get engineering data into infrastructure cloud
  • Comfortable using PowerShell
    • Use the ProjectWise PowerShell libraries
  • AutoCAD experience / lisp / visual basic / other AutoCAD plugin experience
    • Customize the user interfaces
  • Knowledge about Microsoft development tools - MS SQL Server, PowerShell, Visual Studio, IIS, Windows Task Scheduler
