Department Overview

 

The PG&E Electric Operations team ensures the delivery of safe and reliable electric service to our customers. Electric Operations is responsible for every aspect of PG&E's electric distribution and transmission operations, including planning, system protection engineering, maintenance and construction, asset management, business planning, restoration and emergency response.

 

System Protection Engineering provides:

  • Project and M&O support, specify design, requirements and testing procedures
  • Review and analysis of system disturbance and operations
  • Technical consultation and training for System Operation and Planning issues
  • Equipment evaluation, approval and standard development

Position Summary

 

This is an Intern Engineer job for Transmission/Distribution Protection that works under the general technical direction of more experienced engineers. This position trains in all job duties in its respective discipline and requires a high level of training, direction and review of work.

 

 

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. 

 

The hourly rate for a bachelor’s degree ranges from $24.52 to $29.81 and for a master’s degree is $35.37.

 

Responsibilities

 

This job is responsible for providing technical protection engineering for routine projects and maintenance/operation support including but not limited toissuing protection requirements, relay and automatics settings, processing clearances, and investigating relay operations. Emphasis is placed on mastering the protection modeling and databases. Distribution transformer of distribution lines, distribution transformer protection, and non-pilot transmission line banks served from distribution voltages, event analysis, power system modeling, database updating and protection coordination. Job Initial assignments from the tasks below will require direction and supervision; with experience the independence and responsibility will expand and the need for supervision will decrease. Provide protection engineering support for projects and studies.

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum:

 

  • Earning a Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical or Electric Power Engineering or related engineering field (students MUST be continuing education towards degree during and/or after internship) 
  • Students must be continuing education towards degree during and/or after internship. Students must be returning to school in the Fall of 2025 continuing fulltime enrollment.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or obtain one at least 30 days prior to start date.

 

Desired:

  • EIT or FE certification
  • 3.0 GPA or greater in both cumulative GPA and major GPA
  • Engineering experience in utilities, municipalities, construction, or engineering consultation
  • Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills 
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Takes initiative and can work independently with minimal direction
