Department Overview

 

Electric Operations ensure the delivery of safe and reliable electric service

to our customers. Electric Operations is responsible for every aspect of PG&E's electric distribution

and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, asset

management, business planning, restoration and emergency response.

The PG&E Electric Repair Facility department provides tested and repaired Distribution Line

Equipment and quality inspected and tested rubber protective equipment plus the evaluation and

scrapping of used oil filled equipment. PG&E Repair Facility also dispatches Field Repair crews to

assist Distribution Line crews with the trouble-shooting and repairs of Distribution Line equipment

as well as Transmission/ Substation support.

 

Position Summary

 

This is an IBEW Local 1245 represented classification, which has over 100 years of experience

representing employees at PG&E.

We are looking for an employee who is a journeyman and who is qualified to do precision work

with all types of machine shop tools, both power and bench, and is engaged in the performance of

such work in connection with the manufacture, maintenance, and repair of all types of machinery.

This may include the complete fabrication of a job from plans or sketches, the grinding or shaping

of tools, related welding and rigging, and laying out and setting up of jobs. Background of

apprenticeship and experience must be such that an employee can perform these duties with skill

and efficiency. Machine Shop environment: Informal, sheltered, machinery noises, slab floors,

temperature-controlled.

 

 

This position is a DOT covered classification and is subject to random drug/and or alcohol screening. 

 

PG&E is providing the hourly rate that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This position is subject to collectively bargained hourly wage rates and increases. The starting wage rate for this position is $65.27 per hour.  This wage rate is specific to the locality of the job. The wage rate is based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity. 

 

Job Responsibilities

 

- Operates saws, drills, grinders, mills, and sanders; works with blank stock steel to cut, punch,

bend, shape and assemble replacement parts. Solders tinning copper and lathes flat bar.

- Uses hand tools and power tools to repair, modify or overhaul mechanical equipment. - Operates

drills, lathes, and mills. Repair or modify pumps to manufacturer specs and load busters (line

equipment).

- Uses hand tools and power tools to perform preventative maintenance and scheduled

Maintenance on heavy machinery/equipment.

- Performs cleaning, lubricating, adjusting, and checking for wear. Maintains work areas in a clean

and safe condition; picks up scrap metal, worn parts, and other materials. Cleans equipment using

air hose, broom, shop vacuum and steam cleaner.

-Conducts inspections of equipment and evaluates the need for maintenance, repair or

replacement; references work orders, blueprints, and manuals. Submits needs for repair; records

identified problems, measurements, and sketches or proposed changes.

-Operates crane/hoist, scissor lift, or pallet jack to load and unload equipment, parts, and materials;

may also manually unload and stock incoming parts and supplies.

- Communicates by phone or radio or in person with foreman, other machinists, other company

personnel, and parts vendors. Uses Repair Tracking System (RTS) on computer, accesses repair

histories. Records material usage for inventory and charges.

 

Qualifications

Minimum:

Must be at least 18 years of age

• Must possess a High School diploma, GED or equivalent work experience

• Must possess a valid California Driver's License or ability to obtain one by first day of employment

• Must be able to wear company provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

• Ability to work in all types of extreme temperature and weather conditions

• Ability to drive safely in all weather and road conditions

• Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends and holidays

• Must be able to lift up to 60 pounds a minimum of one time a day

• Must be able to perform the physical requirements of the job

 

Desired:

• Machinist Apprenticeship – 3 years

• Prior experience as an Apprentice Machinist

• Mechanical Aptitude

• Familiar with Machine Shop environment: Informal, sheltered, machinery noises, slab floors,

temperature-controlled.

• Skill with power tools

• Problem solving skills

• Graduate of the Bridge to Utility Worker PowerPathway® Program

• Relevant Hiring Hall and/ or PG&E Experience

• Electrical and/ or mechanical experience in the military

• Possess communication skills
