Position Summary
The Supervisor for Electrical Engineering and Analysis is responsible for providing leadership, training, safety, engineering expertise, and technical direction to the Engineers and ESC Technicians who deliver comprehensive electrical engineering services to all PG&E lines of business. Services include failure analysis, T&D equipment testing, high voltage and high current testing, ground grid design and evaluation, and arc flash studies.
The Supervisor manages and directs the work of engineering staff who undertake projects involving specialized testing, analysis, diagnosing, and investigative work for various PG&E internal clients such as Power Generation, Electric Operations, or Gas Operations. The Supervisor performs the strategic planning functions for the department, including forecasting and budgeting, evaluating potential projects or bids, and allocating resources. They provide technical leadership for projects, ensure client satisfaction is upheld, review and approve technical reports, and identify and evaluate new technology for client utilization based on technological advances and client needs. This leader promotes a safety and quality culture, ensuring adherence to all company and regulatory safety and quality policies and procedures. The Supervisor also ensures that work expectations are met and takes effective corrective actions when necessary.
The Supervisor is required to provide oversight on the following specific areas while spending some of their time conducting industry analysis work and leading testing activities in the field and the lab:
• Wildfire innovative technology development and testing
• New equipment testing and evaluation
• Serious Injury and Fatality Analysis and Support
• Equipment Failure Analysis/Apparent Cause Analysis
• EMF measurements and support
• Wildfire Safety Inspection Program
• FR Safety Program
• Distribution and Transmission Standards and Work Methods Support
Job Responsibilities
• Safety Requirements: Adhere to all PG&E Safety requirements, knowledge of electrical utility operations and practices. Ensure the training and safe work environment and practices of entire work unit.
• Unit Leadership: Manage and lead a team of up to 10 Engineers/Technicians, ensure project delivery, establish work planning, personnel goals, performance evaluations for the unit, etc.
• Guide complex parallel projects to successful completion and provide technical direction to inter-disciplinary project teams in a growing dynamic environment.
• Participate and support the ATS Leadership Team and efforts. Be an active member of the leadership team which sets the business and operational direction of the ATS organization. Participate in Department Leadership meetings, lead/chair ATS teams as necessary, create and submit unit budget and operating plans.
• Oversees day to day project work of unit. Allocates project resources and internal requirements. Reviews and approves engineering technical reports and works with engineering staff to ensure accuracy of information.
• Develop short- and long-term plans for the unit to meet financial goals, including billable hours and productive capacity.
• Evaluates client needs and internal resources to determine what services to provide in the near and long term. Develop relationships with clients and obtain feedback on ATS work on a regular basis.
• Maintains a high level of customer satisfaction. Ensures team understands client needs and that project work/product/service meets client expectations. Ensure regular and effective client communication. Typically interfaces with client groups at the supervisor or manager level.
• Oversee the development of bid proposals for technical projects for unit.
• Develop business cases for expenditures, staffing, new technology or new services. Presents to and/or reviews with Manager.
• Prepares regular team/unit performance metric reports for management review.
• Keeps abreast of new technologies in the industry and makes recommendations to ATS management based on business need.
• Completes assigned capital projects on budget and on schedule. Identifies and purchases new capital tools as needed for projects.
• Monitors project work processes, procedures and methods to ensure quality standards are met. Ensures equipment and tools are routinely tested and calibrated.
• Leads change management initiatives and unit activities that support improved safety/quality, including the effective implementation of new or revised safety/quality policies, programs and procedures.
• Supervises staff to accomplish results through effective recruitment and selection, training development & coaching, performance management, employee engagement activities, and rewards and recognition.
Qualifications
Minimum:
• Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering
• 7 years of cumulative experience in electrical engineering, testing and design
Desired:
• Registered Professional Engineer
• Experience in grounding safety studies for utilities
• Experience in arc flash hazard analysis for utilities and generation facilities
• Experience in committee membership which requires setting standards across multiple lines of business such as work methods, FR clothing, or investigations
• Masters or MBA
• 3 years of leadership experience
• Thorough knowledge of testing concepts, theories, practices, methods, techniques in one or more disciplines or area of specialty.
• Understanding of quality assurance and control implementation concepts and practices.
• Knowledge and understanding of client business needs. General understanding of broader company and industry trends and issues.
