Department Overview
Electric Transmission & Distribution ensures the delivery of clean, safe, reliable and affordable energy to nearly 16 million people in Northern and Central California. The Electric Transmission & Distribution Team is responsible for ensuring the electric grid's reliability and resiliency through the ongoing maintenance and operations of PG&E's 100,000 miles of distribution lines and over 18,000 miles of Transmission lines. Coworkers in Electric Transmission & Distribution actively engage in the Lean Methodology through the use of visual management in operating reviews to cross-functionally identify and solve problems, and create standard work. Position Summary
Provides engineering, testing and analysis services and expertise across multiple disciplines to various company organizations to identify, diagnose and solve technical problems. Provides consultation to clients to proactively avoid future problems. Conducts inspections, failure analysis, performance assessments, and evaluations on a wide variety of systems and components. Partners with management to create bid proposals for requested client work.
This position will add strategic foresight and portfolio thinking to a small team meant to drive structured innovation and breakthrough thinking at PG&E company. The team is designed to build PG&E's internal capacity for structured innovation — not as a peripheral experiment, but as a repeatable, embedded organizational capability. The team's mandate spans corporate innovation methodology, strategic foresight, portfolio thinking, and measurement. A key qualification is the ability to think systematically about complex, uncertain problems and communicate findings with clarity and authority.
This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned work location based on business need.
PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.
A reasonable salary range is:
Bay Area Minimum: $140,000
Bay Area Maximum: $238,000
Job Responsibilities
- Mentor and direct a team or teams of engineers and engineering technicians with diverse backgrounds.
- Monitor technology, regulatory, and societal trends relevant to the energy sector; synthesize findings into actionable intelligence for leadership
- Support strategic foresight exercises including scenario planning, futures workshops, and future-back thinking sessions
- Independently develops and executes new practical solutions to highly complex problems.
- Develops relationships within our partner functional areas to assess client business interests and to identify potential ATS opportunities
- Continually identifies and executes business, lab, testing, or process improvements.
- Leads and manages projects and programs independently which includes developing and executing on innovative, novel, and complex solutions with high financial impact to PG&E and/or the client by taking ownership of scope, schedule, budget and communications.
- Oversees assembly of technical systems and prototypes according to engineering standards and knowledge of related principles.
- Is recognized as a subject matter expert in one discipline or type of ATS service and offers breadth of knowledge and performs analysis and executes projects across several disciplines and functional areas to include developing test plans and procedures from scratch as well as applying expertise to successfully function in lab, field, and desktop applications.
- May provide expert opinion or information related to projects or other issues to external customers, agencies or other parties.
- Recognized outside the company as an expert on a particular engineering/technical field or discipline. Represents PG&E and speaks at conferences or seminars. May write articles in trade journals. Influences industry developments.
- Prepares and delivers presentations and recommendations to clients based on project results/findings. Capable of adjusting message for variety of audiences from field operations to senior leadership
- Exercises independent judgment in leading and resolving problems of large impact, scope and complexity with few precedents or standards requiring integration of information from a variety of sources.
- Leads team determining scope, schedule, budget and preparing client bid proposals at project and program levels. Furthermore, they are capable of managing a BU budget
- Assesses business conditions, identifies opportunities, and develops projects & solutions from a multifunctional or multidisciplinary perspective.
- Modifies prototypes, parts, assemblies, and systems to correct functional deviations. Continually identifies testing or process improvements.
- Develops, evaluates and deploys new technologies. Identifies innovations and cost-reduction potential of new and existing technologies.
Qualifications
Minimum:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with emphasis in a discipline related to assignments. (i.e., mechanical, civil or electrical engineering, etc.)
- Job-related experience, 7 years
Desired:
- Masters Degree or equivalent experience
- Experience in management consulting, think tanks, policy research, or corporate strategy functions
- Travel required; frequency depends on assignment (10% -75%).
