Department Overview

Applied Technology Services (ATS) is a multidisciplinary team of 120 engineers, scientists, and technicians.  ATS has been providing technology-based innovative, high-value services to PG&E for over 40 years. The Electrical Testing and Project Support Unit offers a range of electrical testing and analysis services in support of Power Generation (Hydro, Fossil, and Nuclear), Electrical Transmission and Distribution, and Gas Transmission and Distribution activities.   

 

 

Position Summary

This position is represented by Engineers & Scientists of California (ESC) and is subject to collective bargaining. ATS Electric Unit Technicians work with the Electrical Engineers and Staff of the ATS Electric Unit and other ATS Units to perform field testing, support lab testing activities and assist with investigations and equipment failure analysis work. This position is the mid-level, fully experienced, and skilled level of Engineering Technician for hands-on work.

 

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreement, and internal equity.

 

Under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, the hourly rate range for this position is $56.94 to $63.03, subject to collectively bargained wage increases.​

 

 

Job Responsibilities

Electric unit technicians travel to PG&E facilities in locations throughout the service territory and perform field testing & measurements such as:

 

  • Substation and Powerplant Ground Grid Measurements
  • Substation and Powerplant Ground Grid Continuity Testing
  • Soil Resistivity Measurements

 

Electric unit technicians also help support onsite electrical testing activities in the ATS High Current Yard and High Voltage Lab and assist with investigations and failure analysis work.

 

This work may include:

 

  • Fabricating and setting up test fixtures
  • Operating test equipment (Hi-pot, Megger, etc.)
  • Setting up and operating Test Yards & Labs
  • Dismantling, disassembling, and disposing of equipment
  • Material handling & logistical support
  • Lab and test equipment maintenance and calibration

 

Travel is required between 50% to 75% of the time. When in the field, Technicians are expected to work independently or as part of a two-person team.

 

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum:

  • AA degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or similar appropriate area of study; Or the equivalent education and experience
  • 2 years of experience as Engineering Technician I, or, as an Electrician, Electric Technician, or similar role
  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license or ability to obtain one by the first day of employment

 

Desired:

  • Three years or more of experience as an Electrician, Electric Technician, or similar role
  • Knowledge of electrical testing techniques, test equipment, and materials involved
  • Familiarity with Quality Programs
  • NETA certification is highly desirable or equivalent to high-voltage electrical testing, maintenance and commissioning.
