Position Summary

The Welding Engineering Internship position is with the Welding Services organization within ATS. The welding services department provides technical expertise, project consultation, fabrication and inspection oversight, weld program management, development of specialty weld techniques and technology for repair and replacement projects, modifications, inspections, examinations and testing in support of different PG&E lines of business.  This includes Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, Hydro-Generation, Gas Operations and Electric Operations.

The Welding Engineering Internship position will be supporting several key on-going initiatives that directly support and impact our Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant welding program and many of our Hydro-Generation asset management programs.  As part of this position, the summer intern will apply his/her knowledge and experience to help develop new welding procedures through qualification, testing and research.  He/she will also learn how industry construction and welding codes and standards are used to help support ongoing welding programs within the company and how they apply to emergent welding repair and replacement projects.  Work may range from general technical consultation or comprehensive support from planning through production implementation of new technology and repair solutions. The successful candidate is expected to support senior engineering staff on the key initiatives described above.

 

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.

The hourly rate for this position ranges from $24.52 to $35.37.

 

Responsibilities

Supporting senior staff with:

  • Development of welding procedures through qualification, testing and research for Hydro-Generation applications.
  • ASME Section IX Code review and gap analysis related to Nuclear Welding Program.
  • Support for emergent weld repairs at Hydro Power Houses on structures, systems and components.  This includes field visits to several Power Houses to perform assessments on repair applications.
  • Research and development of modern database for existing PQRs.
  • Development of RFP for embedded pipe remote inspection and welding system.
  • Travel may be required; frequency depends on the assignment and is typically less than 20%.

The successful intern will have the opportunity to learn about these activities as described above working with a team of experienced engineers and technicians.  Additionally, the intern will gain knowledge of the larger Engineering organization through the work they will be performing.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Qualified candidates are pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Welding Engineering at an accredited University
  • Students must be continuing their education towards their degree during and/or after the internship.
  • Interest in the how welding engineering is applied in the Gas & Electric Utility Industry to improve systems reliability and performance.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or obtain one at least 30 days prior to start date.

Desired:

  • EIT or FE certification
  • 3.0 GPA or greater in both cumulative GPA and major GPA
  • Engineering experience in utilities, municipalities, construction, or engineering consultation
  • Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills 
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Takes initiative and can work independently with minimal direction
