Department Overview

The men and women of Electric Operations ensure the delivery of safe and reliable electric service to our customers. Electric Operations is responsible for every aspect of PG&E's electric distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, asset management, business planning, restoration, and emergency response.

 

Position Summary

This is an IBEW Local 1245 represented classification, which has over 100 years of experience representing employees at PG&E. This job is subject to collective bargaining.

 

This is a Journey-level position that is a Service Classification Employee that inspects, tests, repairs and replaces transmission and distribution electrical equipment. This candidate may be required to perform all types of substations switching included but not limited to field parallels, field loops, and line clearances as well as electrical maintenance and may perform field switching for substation assigned work.

 

This position is a DOT (Department of Transportation) covered classification and is subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening.

 

This position may be subject to Joint Apprentice Training Committee (JATC) review and approval. Provisional hires will be required to participate in targeted training to achieve journey-level knowledge of system operator roles and responsibilities.

 

PG&E is providing the hourly rate that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This position is subject to collectively bargained hourly wage rates and increases. The starting wage rate for this position is $68.55per hour.  This wage rate is specific to the locality of the job. The wage rate is based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity.

 

Please note: Per letter of agreement (LOA) R1-23-36; All future employees who are hired, assigned, placed, or bid (after the execution date of this agreement) into one of the classifications listed (in agreement) and in the San Francisco Division ONLY is eligible for a 15% pay premium and will be subject to a “bid lock” for three (3) years. In addition, Peninsula, De Anza, East Bay, and Mission divisions are eligible for a 10% pay premium and will be subject to a “bid lock” for three (3) years. 

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Inspect, test, and troubleshoot substation electrical equipment.
  • Install and overhaul electric equipment and machinery, transformers, power circuit breakers, switches, and associated hardware.
  • Identify problems and research how to perform the necessary repairs via manuals, manufacturer's specification and schematics.  Then keep accurate records of the work done to the equipment.
  • Work with various types of electrical construction tools and equipment; work will include confined spaces and working at elevated heights.
  • Perform switching duties associated with 4KV-500KV high voltage equipment inside a substation.
  • Perform work duties that requires the lifting of a maximum of 100 pounds daily.

 

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must possess a High School diploma or GED
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C Driver’s License
  • Ability to work in all types of weather extremes
  • Ability to drive safely in all weather and road conditions
  • Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends and holidays
  • Must be able to wear company provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Must be able to lift and move objects up to 100 pounds daily
  • Must show proof of successful completion of a Union Sanctioned Inside Wireman Apprenticeship
  • Must pass the Basic Switching Course [PSOS – 0250] within first 6 months of hire
  • Must live within 60 minutes of headquarters
  • Valid CA Driver's License Class A Permit or Equivalent by day One (1)
  • If hired as Provisional, must pass the provisional training plan within one year from hire date

 

Desired:

  • 5+ years’ work experience as a Certified Journey-level Electrician in an industrial and/or generation work environment
  • Certification(s) in safety training including but not limited to certification from Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) or Mine Health and Safety (MHSA)
  • PG&E construction or utility experience
  • Relevant Hiring Hall experience
  • Instrumentation and Control experience
  • Power Generation or substation experience
  • Experience in Electric Operations for a Utility
  • Experience with electronic or mechanical equipment
  • Experience working with testing equipment and troubleshooting
