Department Overview

Gas Operations is focused on ensuring the safe and reliable flow of natural gas to our customers. As a whole, Gas Operations is responsible for all aspects of PG&E's gas distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, restoration and emergency response.

The Corrosion Field Support group is part of Corrosion Engineering & Services within the Gas Engineering organization and responsible for providing technical field support to the maintenance and operations departments who operate PG&E's natural gas transmission and distribution pipeline systems. Corrosion Field Support oversees the investigation and mitigation of issues dealing with internal corrosion, external corrosion, alternating current interference, direct current interference, pipeline coating systems and more. This includes reviewing the design of cathodic protection systems and other capital investment projects related to distribution and transmission pipeline corrosion prevention and monitoring throughout PG&E's service territory. Corrosion Field support Personnel also act as a liaison for the field providing necessary feedback and input to Corrosion Program Engineering on company standards, procedures, and processes related to corrosion control for transmission and distribution pipelines. The goal of the Corrosion Field Support team is to support employees in the field who have responsibilities related to the corrosion control program to help ensure asset integrity, compliance, and a high level of competency and understanding for the tasks being performed.

Position Summary

The Senior Corrosion Engineer is responsible for providing technical and field support to the Corrosion compliance organization, Corrosion Program Engineering and other departments maintaining and operating PG&E's natural gas transmission and distribution pipeline system.  This position utilizes corrosion control principles to help departments comply with various regulatory requirements. This position also works with and maintains company standards related to corrosion control for transmission and distribution pipelines and is involved in the solving of technical problems related to pipeline corrosion prevention. The Senior will act as the lead engineer and support less experienced engineers in corrosion related investigations and remediation. The engineer is responsible for assisting with the training and developing curriculum for corrosion maintenance personnel and their supervision.  This position is the single point for corrosion support for a specific geographic area including troubleshooting and other problem solving of corrosion control issues.  The engineer position is responsible for reviewing all transmission pipeline jobs for Internal and External Corrosion issue in the assigned area of responsibility.

• The Corrosion Services Department is headquartered in San Ramon, CA but this position is located in Bakersfield, CA.
• This position will support a region within the service territory. 
• This position may require up to 50% travel within the PG&E service territory.

This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned work location based on business need. The assigned work location will be within the PG&E Service Territory (Bakersfield).

Position duties may include, but are not limited to:

• Responsible for a portion of PG&E’s service territory and oversees all corrosion aspects of those steel pipelines. Includes collaborating and supporting the gas maintenance organizations, corrosion investigations, and the installation of mitigation equipment.
• Cathodic protection system design, cathodic protection system troubleshooting and repair, corrosion failure analysis
• May act as a lead corrosion engineer and support less experienced engineers in corrosion related investigations and remediation
• Provides consultation on one or more specialized area related to corrosion control and cathodic protection, as well as provides consultation / guidance to the other Corrosion Engineers and the gas organization
• May teach corrosion classes through PG&E’s learning academy
• May help develop curriculum for PG&E’s learning academy

• Supports the development, review & update standards and specifications as required.
• Provides technical advice to prevent corrosion and assure equipment reliability.
• Ensures that material selection and corrosion management strategies for gas facilities will provide technical integrity during the projected life cycle.
• Ensures materials are selected in line with relevant Company standards and specifications.
• Gather cathodic protection and other data for evaluation purposes
• Assist with auditing of cathodic protection records.

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.  Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.​

A reasonable salary range is:​

California Minimum:$122,000

California Maximum: $207,000

This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E’s discretionary incentive compensation programs.

 Job Responsibilities

•       Provides consultation on one or more specialized area related to corrosion control and cathodic protection.

•       Provides consultation / guidance in corrosion related investigations and remediation to other Corrosion Engineers and the organization.

•       Supports evaluation and application of new technology to optimize future developments in terms of cost and operability. Ensures that the background of the material selection and corrosion management strategies are understood and accepted by other disciplines and are properly documented for future reference.

•       Supports the development, review & updates to standards and specifications as required.

•       Provides technical advice to prevent corrosion and assure equipment reliability.

•       Supports and conducts audits of relevant manufacturers, suppliers, contractors, and materials testing laboratories.

•       Ensures that material selection and corrosion management strategies for assets will provide technical integrity during the projected life cycle and are within company standards and specifications. Verifies contractor’s materials selection reports.

•       May teach corrosion classes through PG&E’s learning academy and may help develop curriculum for PG&E’s learning academy.

•       May be responsible for a portion of PG&E’s service territory and oversees all corrosion related aspects.  Collaborates and supports the maintenance organizations, corrosion investigations, and the installation of mitigation equipment.

•       May lead and coordinate corrosion related work with the Integrity Management Implementation of ECDA/ICDA, SCCDA, and Asset Strategy teams to assure consistency of application and philosophy across the company.

Qualifications-

Minimum:

• Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience
• 5 years of experience in a corrosion, science, or utility related field.
• Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) certified Cathodic Protection Technician (CP-2) or higher.
• Valid California driver's license on day one of employment

Desired:

• NACE certified Cathodic Protection Technologist (CP3) or higher
• EIT or 15 years of Engineering Experience
• NACE certified Coatings Inspector
• Pipeline cathodic protection system design experience

• Pipeline cathodic protection system troubleshooting experience
• Gas transmission integrity management knowledge
• Knowledge of 49 CFR Part 192, CPUC GO 112E
• Pipeline coatings selection and application experience
• Material selection experience
• Corrosion failure analysis experience

• Professional Engineer registration
• Ability to work well in a team environment as well as both an office and field setting
