Department Overview

 

PG&E's gas distribution system is the second largest in the country, extending approximately 48,000 miles. In addition, PG&E manages 6,700 miles of gas transmission pipeline, operates 9 compressor stations, and has 4 gas storage facilities.

 

The Corrosion Field Support group is part of Corrosion Engineering within the Gas Engineering organization and responsible for providing technical field support to the maintenance and operations departments who operate PG&E's natural gas transmission and distribution pipeline systems. Corrosion Field Support oversees the investigation and mitigation of issues dealing with internal corrosion, external corrosion, alternating current interference, direct current interference, pipeline coating systems and more. This includes reviewing the design of cathodic protection systems and other capital investment projects related to distribution and transmission pipeline corrosion prevention and monitoring throughout PG&E's service territory. Corrosion Field support Personnel also act as a liaison for the field providing necessary feedback and input to Corrosion Program Engineering on company standards, procedures, and processes related to corrosion control for transmission and distribution pipelines. The goal of the Corrosion Field Support team is to support employees in the field who have responsibilities related to the corrosion control program to help ensure asset integrity, compliance, and a high level of competency and understanding for the tasks being performed.

 

Position Summary

 

The Corrosion Specialist is responsible for providing technical and field support to the Corrosion compliance organization, Corrosion Program Engineering and other departments maintaining and operating PG&E's natural gas transmission and distribution pipeline system.  This position utilizes corrosion control principles to help departments comply with various regulatory requirements. This position also works with and maintains company standards related to corrosion control for transmission and distribution pipelines and is involved in the solving of technical problems related to pipeline corrosion prevention. It does data gathering for the construction and maintenance of cathodic protection systems and other capital investments related to transmission and distribution pipeline corrosion prevention and monitoring.  The specialists are responsible for assisting, training and developing corrosion maintenance personnel and their supervision.  This position is the single point for corrosion support for a specific geographic area including troubleshooting and other problem solving of corrosion control issues.

 

  • The Corrosion Engineering Department is headquartered in San Ramon, CA but the headquarter location for this role is Bakersfield, CA. This position will support a region within the service territory.
  • This position may require up to 50% travel within the PG&E Service Territory.

 

 

This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned work location based on business need. The assigned work location will be within the PG&E Service Territory (Bakersfield).

 

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.  Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.​

 

A reasonable salary range is:​

 

California Minimum:$116,000

California Maximum: $184,000

 

This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E’s discretionary incentive compensation programs.

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Responsible for providing technical support for corrosion maintenance and operations in a region of PG&E’s gas and electric service territory while also supporting the specialist and engineers across the PG&E Service Territory.
  • Provide support to Corrosion Operations during CPUC Audits of corrosion maintenance data and attend CPUC field inspections.
  • Provide technical expertise on installing, repair and design of galvanic and impressed current systems Cathodic Protection Systems
  • Train and develop lead & senior corrosion mechanics on the following compliance work: Identifying AC/DC interference issues and maintaining the mitigation equipment; Conducting Close-IntervalSurveys and data analysis; Casing maintenance and troubleshooting; ACVG and DCVG Coating Assessment; Identifying, solving and the prevention of Atmospheric External Corrosion.
  • Provide field training to lead, senior, journey and apprentice level corrosion mechanics on job responsibilities and technical skills in preventative maintenance, troubleshooting and corrective action.
  • Using technical expertise, support corrosion engineers in complex troubleshooting of cathodic protection systems and make recommendations for corrosion corrective work.
  • Develop and update PG&E Corrosion Compliance Standards and procedures.
  • Participate in the development and updating of the training curriculum for the Corrosion Mechanic Apprenticeship, as well as training and course instruction.
  • Direct or participate in management of expense and capital projects.
  • Review prior pipeline cathodic protection records and leak data to determine root cause of external corrosion and prioritize corrective actions.

 

 

Qualifications-

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate degree or equivalent experience
  • 10 years of experience, including 7 years in cathodic protection and 5 years pipeline related experience
  • AMPP Cathodic Protection Technician (CP2) or AMPP Certified Coating Inspector Level 2 (CIP2)
  • Valid California driver's license on day one of employment

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • AMPP Cathodic Protection Technologist (CP3) or higher
  • 15 years corrosion control experience
  • Work experience related to natural gas transmission or distribution.
  • Leadership experience
  • Pipeline cathodic protection system design experience.
  • Pipeline cathodic protection system troubleshooting experience.
  • Pipeline coatings selection and application experience or involvement.
  • Project management experience
  • Corrosion and/or coating failure analysis experience
