Department Overview

Diablo Canyon Power Plant's (DCPP) Mechanical Maintenance Department is responsible for performing maintenance and modification to plant systems, structures, and components during non-outage and refueling outages periods.

 

Position Summary

This is an IBEW Local 1245 represented classification, which has over 100 years of experience representing employees at PG&E.

 

This journey level position’s principal duties consist of performing mechanical related activities including working in radiological controlled areas in support of equipment maintenance and/or modification tasks.

 

To obtain and maintain employment and unescorted access at DCPP, you must be able to pass a drug and alcohol screen, a security background check, psychological screen, computer-based training, and be subject to random drug and alcohol screening.

 

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreement, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors. ​

Under the terms of the collective bargaining agreement, the starting hourly rate range for this position is $65.27 to $71.81, subject to collectively bargained wage increases.

 

Responsibilities

  • Perform journey level mechanic duties engaged in repairing, installing and maintaining all types of mechanical equipment in a commercial nuclear power plant and related facilities not requiring the use of machine tools. Such work will include but is not necessarily limited to bearings, piping, process tubing, valves, pipe hangers, pumps, fans, couplings, mechanical seals, scaffolding, and machinery alignment.
  • Duties may include heat exchanger and pressure vessel repair work, carpentry work, painting, application of special coatings, repairs to building, installation and removal of thermal insulation and refractory materials, installation and repairs to plumbing systems, and repair, layout, bending installation of power plant piping including process tubing, and service all types of fire extinguisher.
  • May be required to do related welding, cutting, and burning of non-code and/or non-structural nature.
  • Engage in performing all classes of power plant rigging, including that necessary for safe handling of heavy machinery. Also required to make up slings and keep all rigging equipment in proper repair.
  • Install, fasten, secure, and remove lifting equipment and devices such as: slings, shackles, comealongs (hand operated leverage/lifting device), eyebolts, manual lifting operates hand tools, chainfall and/or power tools; climbs on/off ladders of lifting equipment to attach or release loads from the hook or boom; works with co-workers in groups or one-on-one to select, move, assemble or remove rigging equipment.
  • Work a 12 hour shift with every hour walking 45 minutes and resting 15 minutes for up to 5 miles daily
  • Wear and work in a respirator in radioactivity contaminated and/or environmentally hazardous areas of the plant
  • Work in and around radiation/contamination fields and environmental hazard areas
  • Successfully complete radiation worker and department specific training
  • Pass respirator qualification, which entails passing a medical examination, respirator training, and fit testing requirements

 

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license or ability to obtain by first day of employment
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds a minimum of one time a day
  • Ability to transport material up to 500 pounds in carts; work in confined spaces; access equipment through an 18 inch diameter manhole; and work in up to 120 degree Fahrenheit environment
  • Ability to bend, stoop, and twist; climb including ladders and stairs; and stand or sit for long periods of time
  • Ability to work at heights (such as 150 feet or higher) on stationary scaffolds
  • Ability and willingness to wear company provided Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Ability and willingness to work weekends, night shifts, extended hours, holidays, with rotating days off, and be available for emergency overtime

 

Desired:

  • 1 year demonstrated experience performing mechanical maintenance and rigging activities at a nuclear facility
  • Experience working at Diablo Canyon Power Plant
  • Related mechanical maintenance training such as through the military, craft apprenticeship, trade or technical school, power plant or employer (i.e., valves, pumps, pipefitting, bolting, rigging)
  • Proficient in the use of hand, portable power and free standing tools such as bench grinders and drill presses
  • Demonstrated understanding of basic rigging principles
  • Demonstrated ability to read and understand drawings including piping and instrument diagrams, piping isometrics, original equipment manufacturers’ maintenance manuals
