Department Overview

 

PG&E’s Power Generation Department (non-nuclear) manages and operates the largest privately-owned hydroelectric system in the nation in addition to Natural Gas powerplants, Solar and Battery Energy Storage facilities. These electric generation resources are in Northern California with the hydroelectric resources located mostly at high elevation in California mountain ranges including the Sierra Nevada and southern Cascade mountains.  The hydroelectric fleet include 62 powerhouses, 184 miles of canals, 41 miles of flumes, 135 miles of tunnels, 19 miles of penstocks, 99 reservoirs, and 142,000 acres of watershed lands all covered by 26 operating licenses issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).  Engineering supports projects, regulatory compliance and SCADA with a primarily focus on the hydroelectric fleet.

 

 

Position Summary

 

Leads various engineering teams that support Power Generation projects, operations, SCADA and regulatory compliance.  As part of the Power Generation Senior Leadership Team this position is responsible for setting and delivering on the team’s goals and metrics as well as contributions to overall Power Generation and PG&E goals and metrics.  Leads efforts associated with PG&E’s Lean Operating System including the five plays of Visual Management, Operating Reviews, Problem Solving, Standard Work and Waste Elimination.  Responsible for safety performance of the Engineering team including driving actions associated with PG&E’s Safety Excellence Management System (PSEMS). 

 

This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned work location based on business need. The assigned work location will be within the PG&E Service Territory.

 

 

Reporting Relationship

 

The Director, Power Generation Engineering will report to the Senior Director, Power Generation Project Execution.

 

 

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • This position is responsible for leading the following activities supporting PG&E’s non-nuclear generation assets:
    • Project Engineering that manages the design and supports construction of Power Generation’s capital and major expense projects.
    • Engineering support for Operations and Maintenance
    • Design, drafting and drawing management.
    • Engineering activities to support compliance with FERC, NERC, WECC and other regulatory requirements.
    • Engineering standards and subject matter expertise for engineering related standards and processes.
    • SCADA, instrumentation, and hydro modernization engineering.

 

  • Strategic Planning: Works with senior leaders of Power Generation to develop strategy to institutionalize the effective use of performance improvement, human performance and six sigma tools and methodologies. Supports senior leadership on strategic planning processes through identification of key initiatives that will accelerate operational efficiencies and execute planned work.

 

  • Process Management: Drives key strategic projects to accelerate operational efficiencies while maintaining high product standards through development and use of standardized processes and procedures.
  • Oversees measurement criteria to determine whether business objectives are being met; monitors metrics to track effectiveness of program elements and ensures corrective actions taken.
  • Communication: Delivers clear, concise and audience-specific updates throughout the organization to drive performance and create a culture that fosters Joy at Work for the team.
  • People Management/Coaching: Contributes high-level skills as a team player and manager of people (i.e., lead/motivate people, manage multiple priorities and projects, and lead and develop effective teams).

Compensation

 

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.  Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.​

 

A reasonable salary range is:

 

Bay Area Minimum: $174,000

Bay Area Maximum: $296,000

 

Or

 

California Minimum: $165,000

California Maximum: $281,000

 

 

 

Background Qualifications

 

Minimum

  • BA/BS Finance/Accounting/Business/Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 12 years relevant experience including experience interacting with and influencing all levels of an organization; experience gaining understanding, acceptance and commitment from senior leadership; proven track record for setting appropriate strategy and achieving results.

Desired

  • MBA
  • California Professional Engineer
  • 10 or more years’ experience with proven success in engineering practice, including design.
  • Experience managing engineering teams with multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Experience with performance improvement methodology.
