Department Overview

 

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Power Generation operates and maintains PG&E's hydroelectric, fossil, solar generation and battery storage facilities, providing approximately 5,300 megawatts of generating capacity for our customers. Our nearly 900 coworkers are dedicated to delivering safe, reliable and cost-effective generation to California in an environmentally responsible manner. Our hydro facilities include 62 conventional hydro powerhouses, a pumped-storage facility, 98 reservoirs, 168 dams and more than 200 miles of canals and flumes, among other water conveyances. Natural gas-fired plants in operation are Humboldt Bay Generating Station in Eureka; Colusa Generating Station in Colusa County and Gateway Generating Station in Antioch. Several utility-scale solar generation plants also are operated and maintained, as well as PG&E’s successful entry into battery energy storage, our Elkhorn Battery facility at Moss Landing in Monterey County. 

 

Position Summary

 

The Field Document Management team is responsible for the maintenance of and updating physical documentation and engineering records at PG&Es Hydroelectric facilities, ensuring the information presented on them is kept up to date and correct. To fulfil these responsibilities Field Design Engineers on the team will work closely with and liaise with Operations and Engineering personnel, regularly travelling to facilities to issue and replace documentation, identify and implement changes and corrections to documents and support Operations, Project Management and Engineering as needed.

 

Field Design Engineers perform a full range of advanced duties under guidance of management and senior employees. Many assignments are at an advanced level of knowledge of design, construction, maintenance, or the operation of the Company's assets.

 

This is an ESC represented exempt classification currently subject to collective bargaining.

 

PG&E is providing the hourly rate that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This position is subject to collectively bargained hourly wage rates and increases. The starting wage rate for this position is $45.96 per hour.  This wage rate is specific to the locality of the job. The wage rate is based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity. 

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates full understanding of Power Generation safety programs and requirements; proactively identifies and resolves unsafe situations; models safe behavior through personal actions and design efforts; holds self and others accountable for safety; and actively contributes to Power Generation safety initiatives.
  • Under supervision and with latitude for independent action or decision, performs responsible engineering work on a professional level in design of engineering jobs, projects, or parts thereof.
  • Responsible for engineering record management, correction of documentation and verifying conditions/equipment at facilities within their respective watersheds.
  • Tracks, keeps record of and audits engineering and construction drawings, documents and CAD files. Ensure documents are updated in a timely manner to accurately reflect As‑Found and As‑Built conditions in accordance with established processes.
  • Regular travel (up to 75%), which may require staying overnight, and performs work onsite at various generation facilities across the PG&E service territory. Must be comfortable travelling in remote areas.
  • Scheduling and coordinating site visits with operations and maintenance/engineering prior to joint or independent work conducted at PG&E facilities.
  • Coordinates with engineers, project management, contractors, operations and maintenance and various other Company stakeholders to ensure correct documentation is present at facilities.
  • Supports Engineering requests for information related to physical and electronic records at hydroelectric facilities.
  • Prepares designs, calculations, drawings, layouts and/or studies from field inspections, preliminary sketches, rough diagrams, specifications, engineering analysis and/or instructions requiring knowledge of engineering practices and shop and field procedures.
  • Checks drawings, designs, or other work.
  • As requested by their supervisor or assigned Sr. Design Engineer/Project Engineer, coordinates and directs the work of employees in lower classifications and provides guidance for training, orientation, or familiarization purposes to associates engaged in allied work 

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum:

  • A Bachelor's degree in the appropriate field of engineering from a recognized college or its equivalent in education and experience (Such experience may include two or more years in drafting and at a level equivalent to that of a Design Drafter)
  • Must have a working knowledge of material and equipment including commonly used national specifications and standards, building, or other appropriate codes and fundamental engineering principles and techniques 

 

Desired:

  • BS in Engineering Degree is preferred
  • Ability to read Electrical Drawings and Schematics
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products
  • Proficiency using MicroStation and/or AutoCAD
  • Knowledge of hydroelectric power generation equipment, operations and maintenance processes
  • Should be able to walk up to 1 mile on uneven terrain, regularly climb/descend stairs and perform work in potentially physically demanding and environmentally challenging conditions
  • Comfortable with lone work in remote areas
  • Experience working in FERC regulated facilities
