Department Overview

The role of the department is to ensure the safe operations and maintenance of the storage wells and reservoirs. The team provides a reliable storage service that also protects the public,

environment and company personnel. A key responsibility is to verify that the gas stored in the facility remains contained in the reservoir and protected from migration due to undesired reservoir

migration or breaches in the wells. Another role of the Reservoir Engineering team is to ensure the storage wells and reservoirs are designed, operated, and maintained to meet both Regulatory

requirements and company standards. Additionally, the safety aspects of the surface facilities (lines, compression, processing, dehydration units, etc.) are under the jurisdiction of the CPUC.

PG&E constructs, drills and operates its storage wells in the storage field in pursuant to California CCR Title 14 Division 2 Department of Conservation.


Position Summary

This position monitors and evaluates storage gas wells to ensure safe, reliable and affordable operation of gas storage assets. Performs testing and analyses services and provides expertise across multiple disciplines to various Gas Operations departments to identify, diagnose, troubleshoot and solve storage well technical and operational problems. Provides consultation and advice to avoid future problems. Oversees the safety of the day-to-day operation of onsite drilling, rework, and well logging/wire line operations.


Position requires travel approximately 20% for operational needs as required.


This position is a DOT (Department of Transportation) covered classification and is subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening.




  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • 3 years of experience including gas storage operations and gas maintenance or relevant experience in oil and gas wells



  • 5 years of experience
  • Knowledge of company contracting requirements
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of wellhead and well bore configuration principals, equipment identification and sizing of well bore tubulars for optimal flow capability.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in solving well bore hydraulic problems related to hydrostatic pressure well killing and volume calculations.
  • Familiarity with Well Control and Blow Out Contingency, as well as, Spill Response Plans
  • Basic understanding of the Back-Pressure Equation as it relates to dynamic operation of storage wells within a storage field. PG&E's Gas Standards that relate to the work
  • Knowledge of relevant API Standards
  • Understanding of relevant DOGGR requirements
  • Knowledge of CWA (Contract Work Authorization), SRM, P.O.'s (Purchase Orders)
  • PG&E's Gas Standards that relate to the work including other pertinent PGE Standards



  • Participates in the development of long-term strategy and resolution of issues through corrective action and continuous improvement process
  • Schedules and conducts the individual well and full field flow tests
  • Assists with design of full field flow tests
  • Takes pressure readings, including weekly well head pressures, troubleshoots issues, and performs well site inspections for issues.
  • Provides surveillance, awareness and communication of potential third party encroachment onfields and facilities
  • Participates in any special studies or projects
  • As required, obtains gas well samples
  • Performs individual well flow tests
  • Oversees maintenance and testing of various equipment including frac tanks, drill pipe, material inventory, cleanup separators, gauges, tools, and measurement equipment
  • Serves as liaison for various internal departments, including gas operations and maintenance or Gas General Construction
  • Serves as PG&E onsite representative during well reworks and wire line surveys, which include overseeing and directing the drilling rig activities, oversee the activities of all the support contractors on the project, the drilling rig activities, activities of all the support contractors on the project
  • May assist in ensuring written drilling and rework plans are followed and safety measures are in place and are followed
  • May assist in ensuring all environmental procedures are followed by individuals on site
  • Obtains approval from Gas Reservoir Engineering for any deviation from the written Drilling and rework plans
  • May manage the resources assigned to the project including managing costs, may provide input on technical procedure and schedule to optimize the work, document daily activities and file on shared drive, and update well files as needed, identifying opportunities for improvement to ensure process efficiency, may review incidents with the appropriate parties
  • May work closely with specialized strategic contractors for the procurement of material, resources, the design of the well and its components.
  • Provides input to the outage scheduling team and coordinates work execution to meet project schedule.
