Department Overview


PG&E’s Power Generation Department manages and operates the largest privately-owned hydroelectric system in the nation. These renewable electric generation resources, located mostly at high elevation in California mountain ranges including the Sierra Nevada and southern Cascade mountains include 68 powerhouses, 184 miles of canals, 41 miles of flumes, 135 miles of tunnels, 19 miles of penstocks, 99 reservoirs, and 142,000 acres of watershed lands all covered by 26 operating licenses issued by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC).
 
 
Position Summary


Oversees and Supervises the Operation of three 404 Mw Generators in unique underground powerhouse. Also responsible for oversight and operation of 230Kv switchyard, Courtright and Wishon Dams.  Must understand and be aligned with Power Generation’s goals and compliance with Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) guidelines. Responsible for the investigation, analysis, determination, and corrective actions regarding recordable, motor vehicle and near miss incidents and warnings at the Helms hydro plant.

 

Travel is expected for offsite, in-person meetings ~ 3 days per month

 

 

Incumbent will be supervising Union Represented Co-workers and will need to be able understand and interpret union contracts.

 

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.  Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.

 

A reasonable salary range is:

California Minimum:$137,000
California Maximum: $232,000

 

This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E’s discretionary incentive compensation programs.

 

Job Responsibilities:
•    Responsible for the safe operation, performance, reliability, adherence to regulatory requirements and the day-to-day operation of their respective watershed and generating facilities including the management of employee performance.
•    Oversees and supervises the operation of all electrical, mechanical, civil and auxiliary equipment.  Ensures function of proposed projects align with Power Generation's goals and compliance with Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) licenses.
•    Responsible as the watershed expert to train others and ensures correct application and adherence to Power Generation’s Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO) procedure.
•    Advocates for Hydro O&M interests during FERC relicensing and decommissioning projects, technical and ecological working committees, and other agency/regulatory/stakeholder proceedings and projects.
•    Responsible for developing productivity improvements and work practices to reduce operating costs while meeting corporate and regulatory compliance.
•    Responsible for the safe operation of dams and waterways including approving and scheduling required inspections, ensuring recording and monitoring devices are in working order and ensuring that watershed personnel are trained in related emergency procedures.
•    Manages in-stream water release requirements and develops reservoir draw down and fill plans.
•    Responsible for the development of operating and guidance procedures related to generation and water storage assets.
•    Provides guidance and technical interface with Operations, Engineering, Construction and Project Management for asset repair and replacement strategies for long-term planning.
•    Represents Hydro O&M during regulatory inspections, and responsible for coordinating follow-up actions such as maintenance, operational exercises, and information/data requests.
•    Requires onsite presence on workdays at remote facility two hours East of Clovis, CA. Also requires 24/7 on call responsibilities to support any Operational issues
 
Qualifications-


Minimum Qualifications:
•    High School or General Educational Development-GED Diploma
•    Valid CA driver’s license (or out of state license if job applicant)
•    5 years of experience in Hydro Operations, Maintenance, or Engineering
•    Work is divided between field and office environment.
•    Will need to climb up and down stairs and ladders, traverse over rocky, uneven, and steep terrain, and drive on narrow and rough mountain roads in inclement weather.
 
Desired Qualifications:
•    Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or other relevant technical discipline
•    Professional Engineers License
•    Supervisory experience
•    Knowledge of Power Generation Operation and Maintenance Standards and Guidelines and associated regulatory requirements
•    Ability to manage operation and maintenance activities within authorized budget and metrics
•    Knowledge of Powerhouse equipment and auxiliary systems
•    Ability to read and interpret civil, electrical or mechanical arrangement drawings.
•    Knowledge of Powerhouse and Water Conveyance protection schemes and equipment)
