Department Overview

Applied Technology Services (ATS) is an internal service organization that provides high quality technical services and expertise on an as-needed basis to all business lines at Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E), including Electric Operations, Gas Operations, Hydroelectric Generation, and the Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP). Based at PG&E’s San Ramon Technology Center, ATS is a multi-disciplinary team of approximately 120 engineers and technical personnel who perform work in the ATS San Ramon offices, laboratories, and in the field.

 

Position Summary

Manages and oversees the work of engineering staff who perform specialized testing, analysis, diagnostic and investigative work. Performs strategic planning, forecasting & budgeting, evaluating potential projects, and allocating resources. Provides technical leadership for work, ensures client satisfaction is maintained at all times, and reviews and approves technical reports. Identifies and evaluates new technology for utilization on client projects based on technological advances and needs of the client.

 

Job Responsibilities

  • Champions the implementation of an improved safety/quality program, including related communications, training and other change management initiatives for the section.
  • Collaborates with peer ATS Managers and ATS Director in developing department performance metrics and forecasts.
  • Leads the client relationships. Interfaces with senior leaders (Directors and above) in client groups regarding project status, quality and performance of work, and process improvements. Inform clients of new programs or services to provide more value.
  • Manages a section consisting of multiple, cross disciplinary technical teams (units).  Specific technical units are:
    • Mechanical Engineering Services
    • Welding Services and 3D Technology Applications
    • Nondestructive Examination Services
    • Materials and Bathymetry Services
    • Instrument Calibration and Repair Services
  • Manages staff to accomplish results through effective recruitment and selection, training, development & coaching, and performance management
  • Supervises five Supervisors and one Principal Engineer. Total department size of approximately 55 Engineers and Technicians.
  • Oversees and coaches the supervisor staff to ensure safety, quality, customer, employee, and technical objectives are achieved for the section. Ensures all staff understand and adhere to safety and quality requirements.
  • May review, provide guidance, and/or approve business cases for the larger, more complex projects or services.
  • Stays current on new technologies in the electric and gas utility industry. Reviews and considers recommendations from staff for new projects, services or technologies. Explores and approves projects and/or services to pursue to meet company and department objectives.
  • Understands, considers and anticipates client needs. Ensures client needs and expectations are met with current and future services and projects.
  • Responsible for client relationship and oversight of all ATS work performed for Hydroelectric, Nuclear and Fossil Generation, and Gas Operations.

 

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant Engineering or Technical Field.
  • Ten (10) years in a related Technical or Engineering environment.
  • Five years leadership experience.

Desired:

  • Masters Degree in Engineering or job-related discipline or equivalent experience.
  • PE-Professional Engineer license.
  • Ten years experience in utility electric generation and/or gas operations.
  • Five years experience in a consulting/services business environment.
