Department Overview

Gas Operations is on a mission to become the safest, most reliable gas company in the U.S. Gas Operations is responsible for all aspects of PG&E’s gas distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, restoration, and emergency response.

The Performance Management and Engineering (PM&E) Functional Organization Lean Team’s vision is to partner with the employees and Leaders to build a continuous improvement culture that drives sustainable results. This includes enabling a management system and continuous improvement frameworks for improving performance by reducing rework, resource waste, and eliminating inefficiencies. By continuously improving our work performance, it will create greater transparency for each employee to understand the plan and how to execute in their role.

Lean Management is our approach to running Gas Operations, which supports the concept of continuous improvement and transparency on our safety, reliability, affordable, and clean goals while enabling meaningful performance conversations up and down the organization.

Gas Ops Organization is committed to implementing a Lean Management system by engaging employees at all levels to break down silos, simplify processes and eliminate rework while improving end-to-end process performance.

 

Position Summary

The Lean Coach role is pivotal to educating and empowering every employee in Portfolio Management and Engineering to identify, prioritize and solve problems impacting their work.  Coaches work directly with Directors, Managers, Supervisors and individual contributors to educate them on lean principles, build leadership capabilities and facilitate problem solving and continuous improvement. The Lean Coach will support development of deployment plans for the lean management tools.  They will provide training as needed to support implementation of new lean tools.  They will ensure deployment quality by evaluating how teams are doing with tool implementation.  Additionally, they will provide direct coaching and feedback to Leaders on best practices and how to improve adoption of lean tools within their teams.

Supports the Gas Ops Lean journey through an understanding of Lean tools, identifying which tools are necessary for each group to meet their goals, designing/implementing Lean deployment plans, and supporting functions to improve operational performance using Lean. Has a responsibility to continuously build Lean knowledge through training and hands-on experiences. Role models Lean behaviors at all times and shares best practices regularly. Spends a significant portion of time in the field (or where the work happens) coaching employees.

 

Job Responsibilities

      

•             Lead efforts to design and deploy tools.

•             Facilitate coaching and problem solving sessions up to directors.

•             Develop and lead trainings (e.g., Lunch and Learns, Bootcamps).

•             Has advanced level of Lean knowledge to be able to leverage best practices and all available resources.

•             Conduct process confirmations of huddles and other core Lean tools to ensure quality (F1-F4 level), observe Lean behaviors, and   coach leaders.

•            Support onboarding and mentoring of new Lean practitioners.

•            Lead others in evaluating and measuring success of various business processes, practices and proceduress, and identifies further opportunities for improvements.

•            Utilize Visual Management tools to track business process related metrics.

•            Effectively apply continuous improvement, Lean Six Sigma and project management processes, tools and methodologies to drive organizational improvements.

•            Facilitate root cause analysis and problem solving sessions.

•            Present proposed reccomendations and progress updates to leaders.

•           Ability to successfully negotiate between stakeholders to reach an agreeement.

•           Plan and prioritize work to meet commitments aligned with organizational goals.

•           Compile and analyze data, assist in development of system control and quality checks.

•           Document work process and procedures.

 

Qualifications

Minimum:

•              Bachelor’s Degree in job-related discipline or equivalent experience.

•             Job-related experience, 6 years.

•             Valid CA driver’s license.

 

Desired:

•             Formal experience in Lean, either through relevant job experience or Green/Black Belt role

•             Experience with change management

•             Experience deploying the core lean tools in the Gas Ops toolbox

•             Able to travel 25-50% of working time.
