Department Overview

PG&E’s Transportation Services Business Operations team is responsible for operating and managing one of the largest commercial fleets in the U.S. PG&E has pioneered efficient and sustainable green transportation technologies as part of our commitment to provide safe, reliable and affordable gas and electric service. PG&E’s industry leading green fleet includes a range of electric vehicle technologies—from hybrid electric bucket trucks to extended range pickups. Transportation Services is nationally recognized as a leader in green fleet technology and continues to innovate, invest, and work closely with our industry, regulators, automakers, and other partners to develop policies and best practices.

 

The Transportation Services department is responsible for managing all aspects of the PG&E vehicles & equipment fleet, from design to disposition. The Transportation team is comprised of multiple operating departments including Engineering, Rental Central, Field Operations, and Business Operations.

 

Operating departments within Transportation Services are responsible for company-wide management of over 13,500 vehicles & equipment, regulatory compliance, capital planning, clean air and alternate fuel initiatives, project support, company policy review, safety and technical analyses.

 

Position Summary

Flexible Location: San Francisco, San Jose, Stockton, Fremont, Sacramento, Davis, San Ramon, Santa Rosa, San Rafael, Modesto, and Concord ok.

This position within Business Operations is focused on providing technical/complex field support for our group of diagnostic technicians. As the lead diagnostic subject matter expert for Transportation Services, responsibilities include managing our Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) diagnostic software program and keeping our diagnostic laptop software current and up to date.  In partnership with IT and other stakeholders, this position will streamline various business processes key to the success of this program.   As the lead IT liaison for our Diagnostics program, this person will partner with IT to improve the turn time on diagnostic software release packaging, grow our diagnostics program significantly, develop tutorials for our skilled technicians, improve delivery and installation of OEM software updating, and management of diagnostics software and licensing and more.  This position requires knowledge and experience of “level 1” diagnostics, which includes Snap-on scanners and equivalent, up to a “level 2” diagnostic laptop. Our Level 2 program includes software from the following OEMs: Cummins, Peterbilt, Alison, Freightliner, International, GM, Ford, and more. The position also requires someone that can work with and adjust their communication style. This flexibility in communication is necessary to be able to assist and solve technical issues for technicians with various levels of experience and skill with OEM diagnostic software, computers, and tools.

Job Responsibilities

  • Manage, maintain, and enhance the Transportation Services diagnostics program.
  • Act as the diagnostics Subject Matter Expert for Transportation Services.
  • Document, review, and improve processes to improve maintenance of our diagnostic laptops and make use of laptops and scanners easier and faster.
  • Partner with our Technical Training and Diagnostics lead to: create, maintain, and build tutorials and other documentation to expand our existing knowledge base.
  • Maintain and manage diagnostic software key licenses in partnership with IT.
  • Stay current with industry trends, benchmark with other companies, and pilot new diagnostic tools and technologies.
  • Lead and partner with IT and other stakeholders as necessary to resolve complex OEM diagnostic software and/or hardware issues with a process improvement mindset.
  • Partner with our Technical Training lead within the department to stay aligned on all actions and collaborate to develop materials for potential emerging training needs.
  • Facilitate and lead Diagnostics Committee meetings, track action items to completion, and communicate decisions to the entire Organization.
  • Develop and implement 5-year strategic diagnostics program, with consensus from the Diagnostics Committee and Operations. 
  • Partner with Regional Managers and other Operations personnel to ensure alignment on diagnostics program strategy and direction.
  • Facilitate group calls/WebEx etc., as needed to share information, provide updates, and keep our diagnostic laptops up and running.
  • Lead and deliver large scale projects within the organization, including: growing the diagnostic program, tracking of milestones, developing scope and budget, engaging stakeholders, and escalating issues etc.
  • Provide prompt, customer focused support to technicians for complex and technical diagnostic software application and/or hardware issues. 

 

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering (i.e. Mechanical, Civil, Structural, Electrical, or Metallurgical) or equivalent experience
  • Seven (7) years of related experience

     

    Desired:

  • 1-year minimum direct experience with these Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) diagnostic software from: General Motors (GM), Cummins Insite, Ford IDS, Peterbilt ESA
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • 8+ years direct experience with diagnostic software and hardware for vehicles, ranging from light duty to heavy duty vehicles
  • Knowledge of Agile software development concepts
  • LSS-Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or higher certification
  • Detail oriented, good oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge and experience with diagnostic trouble codes, ECU re-flashing, and telematics devices
  • Knowledge and experience with: Cummins Insite & QSOL, GM GDS2, Ford IDS, Allison DOC, International Navkal, NED and DLB, Peterbilt ESA
  • Ability to work with individuals in multiple levels of union and leadership positions
  • Ability to create compelling business cases to senior leadership to enhance the overall diagnostics program and increase warranty recovery
  • Demonstrated experience with continuous improvement processes, methods, and tools
  • Excellent organizational, prioritization, and multi-tasking skills
  • Adaptable to changing business conditions and ambiguity
