Department Overview

PG&E’s Transportation Services team is responsible for operating one of the top 20 largest commercial and top 3 largest utility fleets in the U.S. Management responsibilities cover all aspects of PG&E’s owned and rental vehicles & equipment fleet, from design to disposition. The team is comprised of multiple operating departments including Field Operations, Engineering and Business Operations. Operating departments within Transportation Services are responsible for enterprise-wide management of over 13,500+ vehicles & equipment, regulatory and preventative maintenance compliance, expense & capital planning, budget and asset optimization, fuel procurement, clean air and alternate fuel initiatives.

 

Position Summary

The Director, Engineering & Business Operations establishes the vision, strategy, and provides leadership, governance, and policy guidance to PG&E for Transportation Services. Responsibilities include oversight of enterprise Transportation Engineering, Asset Management, Rentals, Fleet Administration, Finance, Budget Management, Project Management Office and, Rate Case Filings.   The leader creates sustainable policy and project governance for corporate initiatives.  The director is responsible for managing $100M annual Capital and $200M annual Operating Budgets. The Director, Engineering & Business Operations provides strategic guidance and advisement to line of business (LOB) officers on Transportation to build collaborative partnerships ensuring current and future business requirements are accounted for and delivery of services are consistent with corporate goals and objectives.

 

Reporting Relationship

 

  • This position reports to the Senior Director, Transportation Services.

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Provides strategic oversight to the 1- & 5-year planning process, budgets & forecasting.
  • Partner with various assigned line of business (LOB) officers as the Strategic Advisor to ensure successful execution of fleet operations strategies that will translate into measurable year-over-year improvements in business client engagement, satisfaction, efficiency and effectiveness. 
  • Establishes, governs and approves asset specifications, including specification and standardization across the organization.
  • Partners with officers in various assigned line of business (LOB) throughout the Company to ensure that all current and future business requirements and common goals are taken into account between Transportation Services and their Operations
  • Acts as the officer level representative and point of contact within Transportation Services
  • Ensures strategic performance excellence through oversight of continuous improvement and performance benchmark initiatives.
  • Develops sustainability strategies, oversees implementation of tactics, and engages the broader PG&E workforce to drive goals.
  • Provides leadership and direction for cross-functional activities that span across multiple organizations.
  • Oversees Engineering, Asset Management and Rental sourcing functions ensuring optimized utilization, demand management and asset lifecycle planning
  • Ensures Transportation vehicles, assets and cranes are designed and operating in accordance with applicable laws and regulations for safe and compliant daily operations
  • Manages enterprise fuel supply and demand, provides oversight of daily, emergency and renewable fueling supplies
  • Oversees department contracts, alliance partner contracts, and strategy for contracting outside parts and services. Monitors service contract performance metrics and costs.
  • Leads, trains and mentors a diverse workforce of managers, principals, bargaining unit employees, and customer facing employees.  Responsible for 30-50 employees/contractors.

Background Qualifications

 

Minimum            

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Engineering or equivalent required
  • Ten (10) years of related experience
  • Five (5) years of fleet management, operations, or field experience

 

Desired

  • Professional Engineer License
  • MBA
  • Six Sigma, PMP or comparable
  • Hands on experience in developing detailed, compelling and analytical PowerPoint/Excel/Word/Visio deliverables to convey complex thoughts and ideas to various stakeholders
  • Experience in at least one of the following strategy consulting areas: operational and performance improvement, transformative change strategy, finance and risk strategy, or other relevant strategy experience
  • Direct experience working in a complex organization
