Join a high-performing dynamic team within Pacific Gas & Electric Company that is working in an exciting operational environment where we are transforming electric grid technology to support smart grid.  The Electric Grid Operations Business Applications analytics team owns the PG&E Electric PI platform and a multitude of analytics products, the number of which is growing at a rapid rate. The customer base of the team includes Electric Distribution Operations, Electric Distribution Planning, Electric Transmission Operations, Electric System Protection, Substation Asset Strategy, Substation Maintenance and Substation Automation. We develop innovative analytic solutions to help PG&E operate the grid of the future. We are seeking a dynamic individual to join our team.


Position Summary

The Business Systems Expert will be developing a career for himself/herself filled with excitement! The utility industry is in the middle of a massive transformation. Energy generation is going from 100% centralized to significantly distributed. Operational decision-making and control actions are going from largely manual to largely automated. Technologies such as energy storage, electric vehicle, autonomous vehicle, robots, drones and machine learning are either already changing or are poised to change the way electric utilities operate. Sophisticated software applications are at the heart of all these changes. And it’s the Business Applications team that develop and support these applications. As part of the Business Applications team, the Business Systems Specialist will be responsible for developing and providing support for these applications. The support will include logging and tracking of defects and enhancements identified by the users, and accurate implementation, testing and release of those items. The Business Systems Specialist must be able to work with individual contributors, and supervisor and manager level leaders in the Electric Operations organization to gain credibility and trust of both leadership and peers.


The successful candidate must be able to work closely with team members, peers within the organization, external partners and the IT organization to deliver high quality support and solutions for business users. Strong functional and technical skills are required, to ensure the infallible quality of support and solutioning that is necessary in electric operations.




  • BA/BS in Business, Engineering, Computer Science/Information Systems or equivalent
  • 7 years of job related experience in Business, IT or Engineering fields.



  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data and present the results of the analysis
  • Experience in using relational databases
  • Demonstrated ability to learn topics from diverse fields
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and to take accountability
  • Demonstrated ability to be creative
  • Ability to communicate in a brief and to the point manner
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and SQL
  • 3 years of experience within any area of Electric Operations in the electric utility industry
  • 3 years of professional experience using OSIsoft PI
  • 3 years of professional experience in analyzing data
  • 3 years of professional experience with scripting languages such as SQL, R, python, powershell
  • 3 years of professional experience in Business Analysis that demonstrates experience in gathering, analyzing and documenting business requirements and testing scenarios.



Data and Analytics (60% - 70%):

  • Understand user requirements
  • Understand the data in different data sources
  • Develop and maintain (issue resolution and enhancement) ETL jobs
  • Develop and maintain (issue resolution and enhancement) analytical reports
  • Programmatically detect data issues and get them resolved
  • Come up with innovative ideas to solve business problems using data


Documentation: (30% - 40%)

  • Document user requirements so that it is actionable for IT
  • Document the technical details of data pipes, reports and analytics
