Department Overview

 

The men and women of Electric Operations ensure the delivery of safe and reliable electric service to our customers. Electric Operations is responsible for every aspect of PG&E's electric distribution and transmission operations, including planning, engineering, maintenance and construction, asset management, business planning, restoration and emergency response.

 

The Electric Operations Distribution Asset Health and Performance Center team is PG&E’s innovation hub for improving the electric distribution system. The Distribution Asset Health and Performance Center team evaluates and launches new innovative solutions PG&E needs to safely operate the grid of the future: the grid with high risks created by climate change.

 

Position Summary

 

The Distribution Asset Health and Performance Center Operations Systems Engineer evaluates and implements cutting edge operational technologies, which plays a key role in building PG&E’s vision of building and maintaining an extremely safe and reliable system in our continually changing environment.  This strategically oriented candidate will play a crucial role in defining and executing innovative technology pilot projects that enable this vision.

 

This position will serve as a technical lead for implementing new technology that will be piloted and then developed into new automation technologies, methods and strategies to keep our distribution system safe and reliable. This position requires a strong ability to work effectively across organizational boundaries and engage with a diverse set of stakeholders and technology users. A strong applicant will be an organized, motivated, and focused consensus builder, who can lead high performing cross-functional project teams in a fast pace environment. The Operations Systems Engineer will round out a small team in the Grid Operations’ new Asset Performance Center that is focused on implementing operational technology projects such as Smart Grid Line Sensors, new technology supporting fault location, SmartMeter analytics, and other safety and reliability technologies.

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Works with limited guidance to complete assignments of broad scope and complexity with few precedents or standards, and assignments that require integration of information from a variety of sources.
  • Applies extensive knowledge of concepts, principles and practices in operations systems engineering to resolve complex problems.
  • May provide technical leadership in one or more specialized or subsystem area; provides technical mentorship to less senior engineers.
  • Plans, architects and designs complete systems in development.
  • Manages multiple internal and external clients and acts as a second tier of support to less senior engineers.
  • Documents processes and technical specifications for the operations systems.
  • Support the development and implementation of guidelines and process documentation.
  • Support the successful implementation of new Smart Grid technology within Electric Operations.
  • Evaluate and influence technology development in the market by engaging with industry thought leaders, peer utilities and leading vendors.
  • Support laboratory testing and field pilots of new technology to understand the opportunities and challenges of implementing new technology, driving learning at PG&E.
  • Engaging PG&E stakeholders to develop solutions that create value for end-users with the right user experience.
  • Drive the strategy for the wide-scale deployment of new technology.
  • Assists in customizing and upgrading operating and related systems to meet ongoing user needs.

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum:

 

  • Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or other technical field
  • 5 or more years of power systems experience including applications including technical understanding of overall electric grid design, equipment, and operations.

 

Desired:

 

  • Ability to manage time appropriately in a time sensitive operations environment
  • Ability to take the lead, technically, on projects
  • Technical writing and documentation skills
  • Strong verbal / written communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate highly complex ideas to diverse audiences, including senior leadership, using a variety of media
  • Knowledge of Python and SQL
  • Familiar with commercial/industrial electrical and/or mechanical prints
  • Technical understanding of overall challenges of grid modernization
  • Experience in engineering, management consulting, project management or product management
  • Demonstrated experience supporting initiatives that involve cross functional engagement to build consensus and influence multiple stakeholders to achieve project objectives
  • Ability to be creative, versatile, efficient and productive in the face of ambiguity
  • Strong drive for results and continuous improvement
  • Exceptional analytical skills
  • Familiarity with Distribution Operation focused Smart Grid technologies such as wireless line sensors, calculated fault location, SmartMeter analytics, FLISR, FAN and other similar technologies
  • Competency in planning and prioritizing work to meet commitments aligned with organizational goals
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
