Department Overview

The Day Ahead Optimization and Asset Management group (aka Day Ahead Operations) is part of the Short-Term Electric Supply department (STES) within Pacific Gas and Electric Company’s (PG&E) Energy Policy and Procurement organization.  Key activities of STES include procuring and scheduling electricity to meet PG&E’s retail load at least cost by utilizing PG&E owned generation, contract generation and market transactions in the California Independent System Operator’s (CAISO) day ahead and real time markets.  The portfolio of generation the group is responsible for is large and diverse, ranging from nuclear power plants, hydroelectric generators, Helms pumped storage facility, gas fired power plants, geothermal, biomass, wind, solar and batteries.  STES also manages and documents transactions across transmission tie points between control areas and supports the Utility’s long-term electric procurement activities by providing operational and marketing expertise.

The Day Ahead Operations group’s core function is to bid/schedule PG&E’s owned and controlled electricity generation portfolio into the CAISO’s day ahead and real time markets to maximize customer benefit.  Over 300 resources are scheduled daily with daily market revenues typically in the millions of dollars.  Scheduling PG&E’s hydroelectric facilities is a key function and involves detailed knowledge of the water systems and associated operational and environmental restrictions to build and operate financial/physical optimization models.  The group also schedules transmission imports from the Pacific Northwest and Desert Southwest and provides expertise to other departments on market operations as it relates to company policy and regulatory outreach.

A final component of Day Ahead’s work is documenting all decisions and decision-making tools, market submittals, and market results.  These are submitted to, and reviewed by, the California Public Utilities Commission annually as part of the CPUC’s Energy Resource Recovery Account (ERRA) proceeding.
