Department Overview

The Grid Edge Team aspires to bring deliberate, practical discourse and thinking to an emerging business model currently wrapped up in hyperbole. This expert analyst will be tasked with helping PG&E develop a point of view and strategic path forward concerning distribution level markets, peer-to-peer energy trading; any construct that can be placed under the umbrella of transactive energy.

 

Position Summary

The Expert Transactive Energy Analyst role requires close collaboration between many internal and external stakeholders; working closely with the greater Grid Innovation & Integration team coordinating  various lines of business including Market Design, Short-Term Energy Supply, Corporate & Utility Strategy, Strategy Implementation, Electric Operations, Customer Care, Regulatory Affairs, and IT.

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Create and maintain a vision and strategic roadmap for emerging energy sharing business models
  • Analyze, simulate and potentially develop and test innovative energy grid market models
  • Work with the Market Design team to scope and execute demonstration pilot projects that test optimization algorithms for DERs when bidding into wholesale markets, subject to distribution constraints
  • Advise the blockchain team on carbon credit market design using distributed ledger technology
  • Understand and synthesize policy, regulatory and legal challenges facing emerging energy sharing business models
  • Develop quantitative and qualitative scenario analysis to understand impacts of varying types of innovative energy market frameworks, considering customer costs, societal costs and energy market and grid impacts
  • Coordinate various individuals and teams who have been working on energy markets to develop solutions to significant and unique challenges, where your insights will be leveraged to drive PG&E forward
  • Engage across lines of business to gain insights and shape strategy
  • Develop and communicate complex ideas to engage PG&E leadership, internal and external stakeholders of all levels
  • Provide expert insights to PG&E strategy groups to drive short and long-term electric strategy

 

 

Qualifications

Minimum:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in Business, Finance, Economics or related field or equivalent experience
  • A minimum of 8 years of job-related experience

 

Desired:

 

  • MBA or Master’s degree in Finance, Economics or related field
  • Expertise in California energy markets, policy and regulation
  • Experience designing markets or evaluating market design (energy or non-energy)
  • Experience trading energy or other commodities
  • Strong technical understanding of overall electric grid design and operations
  • Understanding or experience working with utility tariffs
  • Basic understanding of blockchain technology and applications in the energy industry
  • Analytically-minded, with experience developing quantitative analysis that drives policy or strategy
  • Experienced strategist who has had success applying structured thinking and frameworks to complex issues
  • Understanding or experience working with California regulation and policy
  • Basic understanding of the distribution and transmission systems, including distribution automation systems and/or microgrid controllers
  • Experience creating long-term forecasts that drive business decisions
  • Extremely strong verbal / written communication and presentation skills
