Department Overview

The Safety Assurance organization is responsible for PG&E’s comprehensive safety and health audit program, coordination of the Independent Safety Oversight Council (ISOC) and third-party safety-related assessments.  The work of the Safety Assurance team is critical in demonstrating that PG&E’s processes for safety achievement are properly applied and continue to achieve their intended objectives.   

 

Position Summary

 

The Safety Assurance Director is a key function within the Enterprise Health & Safety team who will lead and drive PG&E’s comprehensive audit program, as well as external assessments, in a way that adds value, supports improvement, and helps PG&E manage internal and external expectations.  The Safety Assurance Director provides subject matter expertise in technical safety engineering standards, auditing techniques, and project management.

 

Reporting Relationship

 

This position will report to the Vice President of Enterprise Health & Safety and Chief Safety Officer.

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Leads PG&E’s efforts to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries and to decrease other safety incidents by creating, driving and implementing best-in-class safety auditing solutions, tools, practices and systems.
  • Develops processes to plan, scope, conduct and follow-up on safety audits, including forming teams, leading audits, communicating results, overseeing the implementation of improvement actions, and maintaining a scorecard.
  • Orchestrates the Independent Safety Oversight Committee work, serving as the key liaison between PG&E and the committee, providing reports, planning assessments, and helping, supporting, and removing roadblocks for improvement action owners.
  • Influences senior leaders on strategies to comply with processes, policies and best practices, improving company’s safety performance and meeting internal and external expectations.
  • Works with the various lines of business and functions to increase consistency by conducting internal benchmarking and sharing good practices.
  • Analyzes data, proactively, to identify trends and emerging issues, leading the communication and resolution of adverse situations before they grow and cause harm.
  • Serves as the recognized expert in safety auditing, collaborating with the enterprise risk/audit function to drive improvements.
  • Keeps up to date on auditing techniques, best practices, technological developments, industry tendencies and innovative solutions.
  • Creates and co-teaches safety & health auditor classes, and develops a team of lead auditors
  • Manages and leads staff to accomplish results through effective recruitment & selection, training & development, performance management and rewards & recognition

Background Qualifications

 

Minimum

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Safety Engineering, Safety Management or job-related discipline or equivalent experience
  • 10 years of relevant safety management experience
  • 4 years of experience in the utility industry
  • 4 years of experience in a company with a size and complexity similar to PG&E
  • Leadership experience
  • Experienced in control of hazardous energies, confined space entry, working at heights, electrical safety, cranes and hoisting, and other programs/risks applicable to the utilities industry.
  • Knowledgeable in OSHA regulatory requirements and ISO 45000.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop audit protocols, standards and plans, with the ability to lead audits, scoping them using a risk-based approach and different techniques. Strategic decision-making skills to organize, plan and implement complex multi-year initiatives, as well as ability to multi-task and meet tight deadlines.

 

Desired

  • Master’s Degree in Safety Management or Safety Engineering
  • Experience in project management
  • Customer-oriented, with a proven track record of achieving measured superior performance improvements.
  • Strong leadership and collaboration skills to create teams, develop plans, drive progress and accomplish results.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including interpersonal and presentation skills, to effectively influence others, including senior leaders.
