Department Overview

Environmental Management, Electric Transmission is responsible for managing environmental support to the Companys electric substations and transmission system. This department also supports other ET work steams such as Wildfire Safety Inspection Program (WSIP), Community

Wildfire Safety Program, and Transmission Line System Hardening, Electric Tower Maintenance Program and the NERC Compliance Program.

 

Position Summary

This is an IBEW Local 1245 represented classification, which has over 100 years of experience representing employees at PG&E. This job is subject to collective bargaining. The Senior Environmental Field Specialist (EFS) reviews gas and electric distribution operation and maintenance projects for air, stormwater, and hazardous materials and waste environmental laws and regulation requirements. The Senior EFS contributes significantly in developing company procedures, guidance, specifications and guidelines. The Senior EFS maintains a lead role in environmental regulatory agency communications and negotiations, effectively defines and manages large or complex projects or tasks, and adequately addresses resources when planning work scopes. The Senior EFS will perform initiative level assignments of broad scope, high complexity working with programs & standards to integrate information to the rest of the Electric Transmission team. The Senior EFS will work with a variety of sources and will routinely apply

extensive knowledge of technical principles, practices and regulatory requirements within one or more areas of expertise to resolve complex problems. You must be able to travel at least 15% of the time with occasional overnight stays.

 

Job Responsibilities

Prepare project environmental reviews in support of construction projects

Have contractor oversight on small to large projects to ensure that environmental guidelines under

air, water, and hazardous materials/waste disciplines are being followed.

Participate in agency inspections and site reviews.

Use independent judgment in applying appropriate principles and techniques in a broad range of

situations to arrive at optimum solutions to maintain environmental compliance and safety.

Write letters, reports, or other submittals regarding small to large scale projects.

Utilize appropriate and effective presentation skills during training sessions or at group meetings.

Serve as leader at group meetings; interact with staff and client organizations.

Improve processes and procedures by identifying and evaluating new methods, techniques, and

creative thinking to achieve department and company goals.

Effectively manage medium to large projects or tasks (scope, schedule and budget); multiple

assignments concurrently.

Work independently on routine job tasks or projects and on non-routine job tasks as a member of

a team on large projects with some supervision and guidance.

 

Qualifications

Minimum:

Bachelors degree in a science or relevant technical discipline or equivalent work experience

8 years of environmental-related experience, such as in the utility industry or a resource agency,

or managing projects at PG&E

Must possess a valid California drivers license or ability to obtain by first day of employment

 

Desired:

40-Hour HAZWOPER Training Certification

Qualified SWPPP Developer or Practitioner Certification or storm water experience

Air Quality permitting experience

Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)

Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS)

Master’s degree in appropriate technical or science discipline with direct application to current job

responsibilities.

Experience working with Federal and State environmental laws and local ordinances

Experience reviewing construction impacts for air emission, storm water, and hazardous materials

and waste impacts and permit requirements.

Demonstrated ability to successfully complete large scale, complex company projects.

8 years of relevant experience including being a lead on large-scale and complex projects.

Demonstrated ability to work independently on routine job tasks or projects and on non-routine job

tasks as a member of a team on large projects with some supervision and guidance.

Demonstrated experience in a high degree of initiative in all aspects of job assignments.

Strong technical writing skills

Demonstrated ability to work productively with both internal and external business partners.

Demonstrate ability to define project scope and adequately addresses resources when planning

projects.

Possess extensive knowledge of environmental standards, laws, and regulations that pertain to

job responsibilities, and has demonstrated skills on the development and application of technical

information to meet these requirements.

Demonstrated ability to solve organizational, resource and logistical problems.

Strong writing and communication skills.
