Position Summary: 

The Sr. Substation Engineering and Design Manager is responsible for the strategy development, planning, compliance, and quality assurance for the Engineering and Design in Transmission and Distribution substations. The incumbent oversees the group that Designs and Engineer the substation projects for asset replacement, reliability and capacity projects. This includes identifying and procuring various automation, protection, and substation equipment. The incumbent manages a group of engineers that produce standards documents and design documents for construction using design tools such as Bentley. The incumbent is involved in all stages of the Projects to procure long lead time material and various review of designs. Individual is responsible for work portfolio, scheduling and balance the workload. 

 

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.  Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.

 

A reasonable salary range is:

  • Minimum Base Salary (Bay Area)    $147,000.00
  • Mid Base Salary (Bay Area)    $199,000.00
  • Maximum Base Salary (Bay Area)    $251,000.00

 

  • Minimum Base Salary (California)    $140,000.00
  • Mid Base Salary (California)    $189,000.00
  • Maximum Base Salary (California)    $238,000.00

 

Responsibilities:
•    Develops and maintains the department portfolio strategy to produce quality Transmission and Distribution Substation Design and Engineering.
•    Reviews the transmission and substation Designs developed by staff to ensure it meets or exceeds PG&E design standards
•    Develop strategies to improve efficiencies and quality by leading change initiatives and training.
•    Lead Team of 100 – 150 Substation Supervisors, Design Engineers, Sr. Design Engineers, Consulting Engineers and Principals. 
•    Facilitates the creation of a design and development environment that adheres to company standards
•    Acts as a subject matter expert on design and engineering-related issues for leadership.
•    May be appointed to lead cross-functional initiatives with stakeholders in multiple Lines of Business in areas related to cost reduction, root cause investigation, unit cost, or other factors determined by leadership.
•    Manages staff to accomplish results through effective recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management and rewards and recognition.
•    Establish comprehensive service level agreements
•    Lead a competent, motivated, and qualified staff of employees, which includes performance management, developing, coaching and resolution of operational issues
•    Provides performance feedback and guidance to staff
•    Manages and accountable for the successful implementation of complex and highly visible, high impact new/enhanced systems on time, in scope and within budget
•    Manage employees, contractors and vendors for the efficient delivery of services
•    Provide leadership and motivation to team members
•    Develop rapport with construction supervisors and superintendents to receive feedback on quality design and estimate accuracy.
•    Ensure appropriate resources are assigned to each project/program.
•    Develops and manages $100 – $200 million in capital infrastructure or retrofit projects and $1 –$ 5 Million in the expense budget. Regularly monitors expenses against forecast, providing explanation or justification for budget items and variances.

 

Qualifications

Minimum:
•    Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related fields.
•    Minimum of 8 years in an engineering capacity, including 3 -5 years in a supervisory capacity. Prior experience in regulatory rate case preparation and with managing budgets for capital and expense programs.
 
Desired:
•    Engineering and operational knowledge to effectively develop and manage department functions, especially knowledge of transmission and distribution operations, substations, SCADA, and automation.
•    Strategic, Visionary Thinking and Problem-Solving Ability.
•    Knowledge of bargaining unit processes and their impact on organizational operations.
•    Knowledge of California and Federal regulatory requirements such as Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC), California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), and California Independent System Operator (CAISO).
•    Excellent written and oral communication skills, including editing skills.
•    Strong leadership and presentation skills.
•    Excellent interpersonal, influence, negotiation and collaboration skills.
