Department Overview

The Energy Policy and Procurement (EPP) organization is responsible for sourcing energy products and shaping PG&E’s engagement in energy-related regulatory and legislative proceedings at the state, regional, and federal levels. EPP oversees long-term energy portfolio planning, risk management, and compliance functions.

 

The Structured Energy Transactions (SET) department negotiates and executes wholesale power purchase agreements for energy generation and storage resources and procures energy products to meet policy objectives cost-effectively. Within SET, the Energy Transactions Team manages the purchase and sale of wholesale electric commodities. This includes structuring, originating, negotiating, and executing transactions for a variety of products including physical and financial energy, resource adequacy (capacity), and greenhouse gas-free energy. Additionally, the team helps to develop strategy related to the purchase and sale of these products. The team is also responsible for supporting regulatory reporting related to this activity.

 

Position Summary

This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned work location based on business need. The preferred work location is Oakland, CA. 

 

PG&E is providing the full salary/pay range for this position.  The actual amount paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, internal equity, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, and geographic location.  The range to reasonably expect will be between the minimum and the midpoint of the range.  The final decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to the factors above. This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E’s discretionary incentive compensation programs. 

 

Bay Area Minimum: $105,000.00

Bay Area Midpoint: $137,000.00

Bay Area Maximum: $169,000.00

 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute a variety of wholesale power procurement activities including trading, negotiating power purchase and sale agreements, developing procurement strategy, and helping to manage PG&E’s risk exposure at the wholesale energy portfolio level.
  • Support the regulatory approval processes for specific transactions.
  • Originate and execute purchase and sales agreements, including innovative product offerings through complex solicitations.
  • Evaluate moderately complex power procurement contracts, understand key commercial terms, and communicate strategic insights to senior management.

 

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Bachelor’s Degree with coursework in a business-related field, mathematics, engineering, or a comparable area; or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 4 years of experience, or less with advanced degree in a business-related field, mathematics, engineering, or equivalent field of study

 

Desired:

  • Master’s degree
  • Energy industry knowledge and experience, including
    • Two or more years of experience in wholesale energy supply, resource development, or strategy/policy within the energy industry
    • Understanding of the energy procurement requirements and needs that PG&E faces and their impact
    • General knowledge of wholesale energy markets including economic fundamentals and typical considerations for energy market participants
    • Knowledge of typical provisions found in wholesale energy contracts
  • Experience working in a fast paced and data driven corporate environment, including
    • Presenting complex data and findings to varied audiences
    • Understanding of typical corporate governance structures in trading organizations
    • Ability to effectively communicate recommendations to senior decision-makers
    • Experience in project management across multiple groups or teams
    • Strong analytical capabilities
    • The ability to work under time constraints and with limited information or instruction
