The Marketing and Communications team at PG&E shapes how the company communicates with the 16 million people it serves in Northern and Central California. We keep customers informed about PG&E’s progress in delivering safe, reliable energy at the lowest cost possible. This team also drives marketing efforts to encourage customer participation in programs that promote energy efficiency, provide income-qualified bill discounts, and advance the electrification of transportation, homes and industries.

Position Summary

The Expert Communications Representative will support PG&E’s clean energy generation portfolio, including Diablo Canyon Power Plant (DCPP) and PG&E’s hydroelectric generation portfolio. This role will be focused on communicating how DCPP serves as the state's largest source of clean energy, providing low-cost, reliable and carbon-free electricity as well as the generation asset strategy, which includes the selling and decommissioning of hydro projects, licensing issues, dam safety and public safety initiatives, and drought and wet year issues.

This includes strategic development and implementation of external media communication, relevant messaging, serving as a company spokesperson and driving the execution of external communications plans. The position is responsible for building relationships with leadership and subject matter experts to help tell PG&E’s story in producing safe, clean, affordable and reliable electricity for its customers.

The ideal candidate is:

  • An excellent writer and communicator who is committed to simple, clear and creative ways of communicating
  • Able to find interesting ways to make the messages of an organization more human and engaging across multiple channels, including social and video
  • Experienced working with the media at many levels (local, state, national, business and trade)
  • Able to develop communication plans, launch and lead communication initiatives
  • Comfortable and effective at working with people across all levels of the organization, including senior executives, managers and field-based employees

The role is hybrid working from your remote office and either the Sacramento/Oakland/Or Diablo Canyon Office on average 0-3 days per week or as business needs require. Additionally, the position will require occasional travel within the PG&E service territory. You also must be willing and able to serve in an on-call capacity as part of an emergency response team, including nights, weekends, and holidays, both virtually and in person.

To obtain and maintain employment and unescorted access at DCPP, you must be able to pass a drug and alcohol screen, a security background check, psychological screen, computer-based training, and be subject to random drug and alcohol screening.

Job Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain relationships with the media, and develop responses for and respond to media inquiries, including broadcast media, and on-cameras.
  • Manage the development, implementation, and coordination of communication programs and initiatives.
  • Partner with various PG&E leadership levels, functional business areas, and external leaders to remain current on challenges and opportunities affecting the company and its employees.
  • Create original content for communications that can be used in media messaging, news releases, social media, fact sheets, and PG&E blog posts (www.pgecurrents.com), etc.
  • Review metrics to assess and resolve discrepancies within performance progress and objectives.
  • Promptly respond to support occasional after-hours and/or weekend emergency events and issues.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • 6 years of related experience in corporate communications, journalism, and/or politics
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, advertising, marketing, public relations, or related discipline

Desired:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to communicate complex issues in clear, concise, easy to understand language
  • Energy industry experience
  • Experience in media or public relations, journalism and corporate or marketing communications
  • Accredited Business Communicator (ABC) credential
  • Accredited in Public Relations (APR) credential
  • Experience in coaching and counseling corporate officers and management at all leadership levels of an organization
  • Ability to collaborate with senior management and/or corporate executives to support strategic planning and decision- making
  • Proficient computer skills (i.e.: Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook) and experience with information systems
