Department Overview  

 

Electric T&D Engineering is responsible for resilient and reliable design and technology development for the transmission, substation, and distribution system. Central Design and Estimating, Reliability, T&S Engineering, Compliance and Risk, and Test and Technology Development all report into T&D Engineering.  

 

Position Summary 

PG&E is seeking a PhD student to be a member of the Electric Engineering organization, reporting directly to the VP of Electric Engineering and matrixed to the Chief of Staff for Electric Engineering.  

This role will focus primarily on supporting the VP of Electric Engineering and Chief of Staff to the VP on various projects that support the broader organization (Central Design and Estimating, T&S Engineering, Test and Technology Development, and Risk & Compliance).  

 

PG&E is providing the hourly rate range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. 

 

The hourly rate for a PhD degree student is $43.37.

 

Responsibilities 

 

  • Support VP and Chief of Staff with special projects that include but are not limited to:  

  • Developing a strategy and implementation plan for influencing regulators 

  • Optimizing the huddle structure and associated metrics (DORs, WORs, MORs) 

  • Supporting and implementing Lean improvements (dashboards, huddles) 

  • Reviewing and updating the POPs and TIPs for EE and sub-groups including catch-back plans 

  • Extract and analyze data from various PG&E systems, aggregating and synthesizing to formulate findings and recommendations. 

  • The successful intern will have the opportunity to lead and/or support activities as described above. Additionally, the intern will gain knowledge of the larger Electric Engineering organization through the work they will be performing. 

 

Qualifications  

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Qualified candidates are pursuing a PhD in Policy at an accredited University 

  • Students must be continuing their education towards their degree during and/or after the internship 

 

Desired Qualifications: 

  • 3.0 GPA or greater in both cumulative GPA and major GPA 

  • Engineering experience in utilities, municipalities, construction, or engineering consultation 

  • Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members 

  • Experience collecting and reviewing data (e.g. searching for anomalies/data gaps/inconsistencies), utilizing repeatable processes and adding controls, when possible, to increase data integrity 

  • Excellent written (technical report writing, email, presentations, dashboards/summaries of key takeaways) and oral (phone and in-person) communication skills, including technical writing and presentations 

  • Strong attention to detail, ensure consistency across concepts, be careful about details and thorough in completing work tasks. 

  • Takes initiative and can work independently with minimal direction, escalating when appropriate to get work done in a timely manner.
