Department Overview
The System Performance, Reliability and Resiliency Strategy team within the overall Electric Transmission and Distribution Engineering organization is responsible for planning, organizing, and managing the resources necessary to successfully execute PG&E’s Electric Reliability Strategy and initiatives. This team of forward–thinking individuals will be tasked with deploying technology and infrastructure and influencing the organization to achieve the company’s reliability goals. The team is responsible for implementing programs required to modernize the electric grid allowing for safe, resilient and efficient operations. The team participates in a cross functional team of internal and consulting participants being tasked with leading the transition of a project from development and testing to being operational for each phase of each project.
Position Summary
We are looking for a data science intern to join our team to help develop and deploy reliability analytics & predictive models to identify incipient failures on the electric grid. In this role you will work as a part of the Predictive Analytics team to help improve the development of predictive and anomaly detection models. This is a role at the intersection of data science, engineering, data engineering, and data analysis.
Responsibilities
As an integral member of the team, the intern will support and contribute to the following activities:
- Data Management and Analysis: Collecting, cleaning, integrating, and analyzing data from diverse internal and external sources.
- Model Development: Designing, developing, and deploying analytical models (statistics and ML) and data pipelines across big data cloud platforms such as Palantir Foundry, Amazon AWS, and similar environments
- Visualization and Reporting: Building interactive dashboards to visualize model performance, data analytics and communicate key insights.
The successful intern will have the opportunity to learn about these activities as described above working with a team of experienced data scientists and engineers. Additionally, the intern will gain knowledge of the larger Electric Engineering organization through the work they will be performing.
PG&E is providing the hourly rate that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation rate is specific to the locality of the job. The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.
The hourly rate for a bachelor’s degree is $34.07 and for a master’s degree is $46.46.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Qualified candidates are pursuing a Master’s or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Statistics, Data Science, or other related field
- Students must be continuing their education towards their degree during and/or after the internship
Desired:
- Pursuing a Masters or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering with an emphasis in Power Systems or Industrial Engineering
- Experienced in Python
- Minimum 3.0 GPA (both cumulative and major GPA)
- Strong foundation in statistics and/or machine learning
- Passion for solving complex problems to support communities and enthusiasm for learning new technologies
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
