Department Overview

PG&E Safety & Infrastructure Protection (SIP) Teams provide direct defense of utility infrastructure, conduct safety and prevention, mitigation, and maintenance activities on company properties or rights of way, year-round. In addition, SIP Teams provide safety standby services to PG&E employees performing high-risk work activities. A SIP team is staffed by a SIP Crew Lead and a SIP Technician who operate a PG&E vehicle that meets the minimum capabilities of a Type 6 wildland fire engine. Both the SIP Crew Lead and SIP Technician are represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). PG&E has 48 teams located throughout our service territory in high fire-threat areas.

 

Position Summary

SIP Crew Leads perform a variety of tasks while directing the work of SIP Technicians. This includes providing emergency first aid at PG&E work sites, conducting PG&E safety inspections, asset protection standby (during “high-risk” work activities) at PG&E work sites, mixing and applying retardant to protect PG&E infrastructure, medical response standby services, and other duties as assigned. In addition, the SIP Crew Lead operates and provides training and instruction in the use of a variety of hand tools and motorized equipment, maintains and performs repairs of equipment, and performs occasional heavy physical work.  The SIP Crew Lead provides field coordination of SIP Technicians, may lead classroom and field training, assists others in performing material management tasks; keeps records; writes and submits reports as required; and other related work as assigned.

 

Available positions are possible at the following locations: Garberville, Chico, Redding, Concord, Monterey, Lemoore, Oakhurst, Mariposa, Dinuba, and Fresno.  These locations may be subject to change due to business needs, but available locations will be in the PG&E service territory.

 

The position is a General Construction position and individuals must be able to travel and transfer to a new headquarters upon request at any time; throughout the entire PG&E service territory with no guarantees as to how long you will be away from home.

 

This classification is represented by IBEW Local 1245, which has over 100 years of experience representing employees at PG&E.

 

PG&E is providing the hourly rate that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This position is subject to collectively bargained hourly wage rates and increases. The starting wage rate for this position is $52.36 per hour.  This wage rate is specific to the locality of the job. The wage rate is based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, collective bargaining agreements, and internal equity. 

 

This position is a DOT (Department of Transportation) covered classification and is subject to random drug and/or alcohol screening.

 

Job Responsibilities

Performs all duties of the SIP Technician and leads small groups of Safety and Infrastructure Protection Technicians in the performance of the duties listed below:

  • Provide emergency first aid and medical standby at PG&E work sites
  • Conduct safety inspections including defensible space inspections and fuel hazard assessment at PG&E facilities
  • Support PG&E asset protection efforts including mixing and applying retardant
  • Accompany vegetation management crews during wildfire recovery to suppress incidental ignitions per the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) approval
  • Asset protection at PG&E-owned facilities and may accompany crews, as needed and during wildfires, as permitted by the AHJ
  • Mop up of fire-damaged PG&E assets as authorized by the AHJ
  • May perform PG&E emergency standby duties, as needed by a “competent person” (pursuant to RC 23487) in coordination with the AHJ or Incident Commander
  • Supports monitoring of weather conditions during potential Public Safety Power Shutoff events
  • May provide continuing medical and technical training and build safety awareness of crews (e.g. tailboards and work observations, confined space)
  • Maintain EMT/CPR/AED skills and certification
  • Maintain a status of being physically fit; per the negotiated standard, to include initial testing
  • Maintain all required training as agreed to by the parties
  • Participate in emergency drills, including coordination with the AHJ
  • Required to maintain a Class C license
  • Required to participate in the Employer Pull Notice Program (EPN) with DMV
  • Other duties as agreed upon by the parties in support of PG&E Field Operations
  • Perform Defensible Space mitigation work around PG&E assets.
  • Conduct Live Fuel Moisture Sampling

Additional Duties:

  • May provide training and instruction of use of a variety of hand tools and motorized equipment, such as chainsaws, weed eaters, mowers, pumps, etc.
  • Maintains and performs repairs of assigned equipment and performs occasional heavy physical work
  • May lead classroom and field training
  • Assists others in performing accounting, budgeting, personnel, and material management tasks
  • Keeps records; writes and submits reports as required
  • Performs other related work as assigned

Qualifications

 

Minimum:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED
  • Must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license by day one of employment
  • Ability to work in all types of weather conditions
  • Ability to drive safety in all weather and road conditions
  • Ability to work extended hours, nights, weekends and holidays
  • EMT-Emergency Medical Technician 1 certification (must be a license issued by a California LEMSA)
  • Incident Command System 100, 200 and 300 certifications or equivalent
  • Basic fire fighter safety training which may include Cal Fire Basic Academy, National Wildfire Coordinating Group Firefighter 2 Certification, California State Fire Marshall Firefighter 1 Academy, National Fire Protection Association Firefighter 1 Certification, military firefighter training or equivalent
  • Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior S-290 certification
  • Five (5) years of experience as a PG&E SIP Technician OR three (3) years of experience as a fire captain (full time) with a federal, municipal, state or tribal fire agency
  • Qualified fire service driver/operator training which may include California State Fire Marshal Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator 1A/1B or 1E, CA State Fire Marshal FSTEP Basic Emergency Vehicle Operations AND Basic Pump Operations Certification, Engine Boss (ENGB) Red Card Qualification, CA State Fire Marshal Driver Operator Certification or equivalent
  • Ability to pass company-required physical abilities assessment upon employment offer (Post Offer Physical Assessment – POPA)
  • Ability to obtain other motor vehicle licensing as required by the company based on business need

Desired:

  • Associate degree in Fire Science, Natural Resources, Forestry, Business or other closely related field
  • Five (5) years of fire protection leadership experience
  • Local government/wildland agency experience
  • National Wildfire Coordinating Group L-380 Fireline Leadership Certification
  • Incident Command System 400 certification or equivalent
  • Other miscellaneous Incident Command System Certifications (e.g. Strike Team Leader, Field Observer)
  • State Fire Marshal Company officer certifications
