Department Overview

The Substation Owners Engineering team is responsible for overseeing project engineering and design work that is contracted out for PG&E substations. The team is responsible for the following:

• Transmission Substation engineering and design

• Distribution Substation engineering and design

• Technical assistance on feasibility studies

• Technical coordination with Transmission Line Engineering and design

• Technical consultation (project options)

• Project scope, detailed estimates, material lists

• Equipment specifications

• Construction support

• Oversight to engineering contractors

• Other activities as needed

 

Position Summary

The Supervisor of the Owners Engineering will lead a team of Sr. Consulting, Senior and Journey Project Engineers, Senior Design Engineers and EA’s. The team is responsible to oversee contracted engineering and design and ensure quality design products for electric substations in all regions on time and cost efficiently. S/he will be responsible to work collaboratively with the Project Management team to build a balanced engineering plan to ensure project scope, schedule and cost requirements are met. In addition, s/he will be responsible for developing, tracking and communicating key performance metrics such as Safety, Project Execution (design quality), Work Plan Achievement (financial project performance), Work Plan Schedule Achievement (meeting project milestones). S/he will lead his/her team in adoption and proficiency of new technologies to better support project success. S/he will be responsible to develop and maintain a relationship with our contractors so that they are knowledgeable/aware of our process, meet our expectations, keep us in compliance, delivery a quality product and ensure a safe working environment.

 

This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned location based on business need. A minimum of two days a week in the office is required.

 

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job.  The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.  Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed towards the middle or entry point of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.

 

California Miniumum: $137,000

California Mid:$184,000

California Maximum:$232,000

 

This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E’s discretionary incentive compensation programs. 

 

 

Job Responsibilities

 

  • Assigns individual and team projects to balance project requirements with resource availability. Tracks schedule and cost performance, and ensures delivery of high quality design products.
  • Encourages teamwork, commitment, and quality work products, while following the ESC contract.
  • Forecasts work and matches with appropriate short and long term resource plan. Supports resource need for transformation initiatives and standard development.
  • Leads an electrical or civil design engineering team that provides support for transmission line or substation projects throughout the service territory. Promotes accountability through recognition, coaching, training and development.
  • Looks for and recommends process changes to improve design productivity, quality, and customer focus. Supports related department initiatives.
  • Maintains forecasts of project resource requirements. Plans for internal design workload and recommends workload to be contracted. Supports contract work through careful drawing control and design quality reviews as required.

  • Tracks actual vs. estimated costs and schedules, tracks drawing control, improves productivity, and uses Change Orders effectively.

 

 

Qualifications

 

Minimum:

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering-Electrical or equivalent experience
  • Experience in engineering, electrical, substations emphasis, 1 year
  • Experience in engineering, or related, 5 years

 

Desired:

• 2 years of leadership experience (supervision or a lead role)

• Strong communication (written and verbal), organizational and interpersonal skills

• Registered Electrical P.E.

• Knowledge of Transmission or Substation engineering, design and construction experience

• Familiarity with PG&E standards and design processes

• Familiarity with ESC, Local 20 – Labor contract

• Strong MS Office skills: Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint

• Familiarity with Project scheduling tools: Clarity, MS Project, Primavera (P6)
